I’ve just installed my first blog, and I had it all pretty and working until I went live.

    https://www.gamehounds.net

And then I found out that my comments section doesn’t work and commenters’ registration page is kinda nonexistent. I guess I had just assumed that comments would work because nowhere did I see or read anything that suggested you need to do something special to create the typical commenter-registration you see on most websites.

    Yeah… assume… ass… U… Me…

At first, it was impossible to leave a comment. “To leave a comment you must register” was visable, but the link led to a WP login screen. Kinda not very sexy.

Worse, there was no way to register.

So then I turned off all controls on commenters, so I’m wide open to spam, but I wanted to see if I could get comments to work. Then, when my commenters go to “register” link, that WP login allows you to register, but when you go back to my website and enter a comment, it just puts you back at the WP login screen without accepting the comment. It’s a big loop.

I have scoured the internet, this forum, numerous designers’ blogs, even YouTube. There is no information about how to actually create registration pages and set up the comments.

My question: How do you actually create those commenter registration forms that are normally part your theme? You know, these fields where you enter a user name, real name and email, and not have to go to a weird and confusting WP site to register? Is this a plugin? An addon? Or is it some code I have to add to one of my .php files?

Second: How do you actually set up comments? I have scoured the net looking for ANYTHING on this — this forum, numerous designers’ blogs, even YouTube. I mean, I have looked EVERYWHERE!! By the lack of information, you’d think it just automatically happens on installation, but apparently not.

I am using PressRow 1.0, which is a standard template offered when you install WP 2.3.3. The theme has been updated, but I didn’t realize that until after I actually visited the designer’s site to figure out how to set up comments.

  • There is nothing to set up.

Remove the registration requirement: it is useless (as antispam) and annoying.
Options > General: Membership – uncheck BOTH boxes!

    Everything should work.

Next, search for antispam plugins (Akismet, BadBehavior, SpamKarma) and install at least 2 of them. Akismet comes with your WP package. BB works well with any of the two others.

    Thanks, Moshu. That worked!

Um…. Not exactly sure who ls998 is… I guess someone else who had a similar question.

As for me, I have no idea if it actually worked. But I will try.

So, Moshu, does that mean that once I change those settings that my readers who want to leave comments will not be sent to a WP login screen? Because that’s specifically my problem — the WP login screen to register and the endless loop between the comment window and the WP longin screen after registering.

    Thanks.

Wow. Go freaking figure — it worked. Thank you, indeed, Moshu. Though it’s kinda weird that one of those boxes said “let anyone comment” or something of the sort.

Pretty darned counterintutive. But I’m sure not complaining. Hope this helps a lot of people, because the documentation on commenting is pretty scarce.

    You’re my hero, Moshu.

Now I just have to figure out why my next/previous posts links won’t work.

Thanks Gamer Eddie for posting this question as I too was having the same problem as you were having and I guess Is998 had the same thing… but i gotta tell you I was scratching my head trying to figure out what I had to do to get this comments showing up on my trading site.

I also ticked the first box much like you did and as you said it isn’t very clear on the comments part… If I hadn’t googled this question and not find your post, I still wouldn’t have been able to work it out.

It’s such a simple thing and can’t believe a simple tick of the box can make a difference.

I hope the wordpress upgrade to 2.5 will be much better for not just existing but for new wordpress users.

By the way, I like wordpress and I think it rocks. I guess, it’ll get better and better (in time).

    cheers,
    Armand

And let’s not forget thanks Moshu for finding this solution for us…

    You’re a legend!!!!

    Moshu,

You write: “Remove the registration requirement: it is useless (as antispam) and annoying.

Um — where? I’m using wordpress hosted on my server, version 2.6.2

Can you help me out here?

    THanks

    Hello there,

I have 2.6 installed and the problem that I face is partly resolved with above solution.

    There are the tests –
    1. User is not logged in, goes to a post and clicks on comments- Comment form opens. User can log the name, email id and submit the comments. Upon submit, the user is taken back to the same page and the comment is found to be submitted. Everything works perfectly. A mail also is received by the administrator for this comment.

    2. When the user is logged in,, the comment form open, user can enter comment and upon submitting, the user is taken to
https://www.marathishabda.com/shabda/wp-comments-post.php and then nothing happen. The page is blank, status is “done” but the user is not re-directed to the page where it started.
No email is received by the admin this time.

Can you tell me what needs to be changed on comments.php?

    @bethbarany,

in newer WP versions : admin > Settings (instead of Options)…
