twenty-thirteen theme -Add grid style photos with custom links to the front page

First off, I created this post under plugins earlier. I but got no replies I thought perhaps that was the wrong forum so I’m adding it to the themes forum instead.

I’m very new to WordPress. I’d like to add images to the front page in a grid style with custom links from each image to an artist page. I thought I could use Grid Gallery With Custom Links but, per the doc:
This plugin requires Media Library Custom Fields plugin to be installed. Per the doc for that plugin:
This plugin is intended for WordPress developers who want to create image galleries and require a few additional fields not provided by Media Library.
Please note that this plugin isn’t suitable for non-developers. To use custom fields you need to build your own custom plugin.

I tried using TablePress but the images don’t display correctly on mobile devices. Am I missing or misunderstanding something in the plugins doc? Is there another plugin or custom CSS that I could use?
