• Custom Header Images don’t display on individual blog posts in spite of being selected. Instead, every blog post displays the header image from the main theme page. This is a recent development and I can’t seem to figure out what’s going on. Have tried disabling all plug-ins and it didn’t make any difference. Please advise. Thanks!

I just tested this out on the latest release and it works the way it should. Can you try removing the image and re-adding it?

When I remove the custom header image on the main/front page, all of the custom images disappear from all of my blog posts. If I attempt to remove and reselect the custom image on the blog post, it still won’t display an image – just a box with a question mark in the spot where I have attempted to select the custom image. When I re-add the custom image to the main/front page, it reappears at the top of all posts regardless of what custom image was selected for that post.

One final note. All of my thumbnails still display the correct custom header image for the blog post or podcast. Also, when I share my post via social media, it displays the individual custom images. It is only at my website when clicking on a post that you see the main page custom header image rather than the one selected for that post.

Looks like you have Photon turned on in the Jetpack settings. Turn that off and test again.

Also, go to the Customizer and switch the site width, save, and then switch it back and save again.

Okay, I tried both and still no dice. Turned Photon off and then resized both the site width and the main content width using the customizing layout. Saved and tried it, and then changed it back and tried it and I’m still having the same problem.

So you’ve set the featured image (which appears next to your blog post excerpts) and also the custom header image (which appears above your main content on single post pages)?

    Thread Starter adamncrawford

    (@adamncrawford)

Yes – the custom header image is the image which is appearing in place of the of the featured images which were selected for all of my individual posts. When I remove the custom header image, the individual posts don’t display any images even though featured images are selected.

If you take a look here:

    https://demos.bavotasan.com/matheson/category/features/

The Responsive Design post has a featured image set. That image appears next to the excerpt.

    If you go here:

    https://demos.bavotasan.com/matheson/2014/01/responsive-design/

You’ll see it also has a custom header image selected.

Here’s a screenshot of the post edit page:

Yes. The problem is it says, “Set a custom image for the header if you want to use something other than the featured image.” I don’t want to use anything other than the featured image. I want to use the featured image but the pages keep defaulting to the custom header image from the main page. This was working fine – now it’s not. Here are a couple of screen shots:

Main page with custom header image selected

Post page with a featured image loaded and no custom image set

How the page actually appears live

As you can see, rather than showing the featured image which is selected, it shows the custom header image from the home page.

Incidentally – thanks for the responses and trying to help me figure out what’s going on. I’m pretty frustrated – can’t figure out why all of a sudden this isn’t working. I thought maybe a plug-in update screwed something up, but even after disabling all plug-ins I still had the problem.

The bug is actually in the text. You must set a Custom Header image for it to replace the default header image. Ignore that text. It will be removed in the next update.

So, on an individual post, rather than just setting a featured image (what I used to do) I must now also set a custom header image? This appeared to work, but it also means that I am now going through all of my previous posts and adding the appropriate custom header image which is kind of a drag. Why does selecting a featured image for the post no longer work? When did this change?

This topic has been very helpful.
I was confused too about how the featured and header images work.
    Thanks for your replies bavota.

I just looked through older versions of Matheson and using a featured image as a custom header image was never an option. The code always checked for a custom header image or defaulted to the site’s header image.

The text is something that I overlooked when carrying it over from the premium version.
