I have a working WP MultiSite on Linux Mint 17.3. I have vsftpd (FTP for Linux) on my local install. I do not know how to set the FTP server to connect/access my local WP install. No clue.

BEFORE I figure out that connection…do I even need it?

Must I have FTP access to work with WP on a local install?

    Thank you

    Thanks!

I do not quite get it, not clearly – I need to research vsftpd more.

    Hi! Thanks for writing.

No, one does not need to install FTP server on localhost in order to use/administer WordPress installed on localhost.

How to get stuff done then?

Common task of FTP is to move files around. For example If it was on hosting, then one would use FTP move files into the …/wp-content/plugins/ folder to manually install a plugin.

If on is on localhost on Linux Mint install, one can instead use Nemo file explorer (or whatever File Explorer is there). For example use Nemo File Explorer to move files into the …/wp-content/plugins/ folder to manually install a plugin.

OMG Thank you!!!!!! That I can do. You have saved me so much time, confusion, and hassle. I must say thank you again, big thanks. Now I can get to work learning the backend of WordPress – without destroying my live sites or crashing the host server. Very excited again!

Plugins were my next question. Cool.

Glad that helped! Thanks for having marked the thread as resolved.

    @mjjojo

First, couldn’t he just run a terminal window and mv .zip file.
    mv ~/compressed.zip ~/plugins/compressed2.zip

or also could he not just login into the wp-admin and use the plugin gui to add plugin from computer?

Just dont understand why @toni would want ftp access, when he has access?

@webdesignerchristian. First, I’m a gal. Toni for girls Tony for boys. ??

Quick Answer: because I was clueless.

Your question to me is a good one and was my original question. Do I need FTP on a local install?
(I thought it was a yes or no question. I got all sorts of complicated responses on another thread I had started before I was sent to this forum.)

I only installed an FTP server because I thought I needed one. I did it via command prompt and configured it – no clue how to use it. Then I sat back and wondered if I needed one at all. And hoped I did not.

    Thanks for responding!

I’ll be uploading plugins via the GUI.

@toni my apology ms. toni. please mark thread resolved
