Media-Uploader outside the wordpress – root

  • Hi,
    I have some trouble with the media – uploader if I set the upload – dir outside the current wordpress-dir (../wp-uploads as upload-dir which means https://www.kiezkicker.de/wp-uploads).
    I do it this way cause I have two wordpress installed – one at kiezkicker.de/blog and the other at kiezkicker.de/kiezkicker – and I want to use the same upload-folder for both of them.

    The upload self work pretty fine (after I create the 2008 and 04 – folder manually cause wordpress seems unable to create a folder (04) inside a folder (2008)… did it use mkdir? LOL…). The files are stored in three versions, the original, the middle size and the thumb, all pretty fine.

    But what wouldn’t be working for me was the insertion of these files. I couldn’t see the uploaded files inside the upload-panel.
    If I use wp-content/uploads instead everything would be fine but it’s annoying to upload the same images at two wordpress-installations if you would use it on both… so I decide to use the same upload-dir for both of them which don’t seem to work.

    Any workarounds around for that issue?

  • Well, why don’t you softlink both pathes to the same physical directory?

    Hm, I don’t really understand. I have added in both wordpress – admins ../wp-uploads – which means https://www.kiezkicker.de/wp-uploads?

    Oh I thought because you wrote about the MKDIR command you know about Unix specifics. One of those specifics is a so called “softlink”. Eample:

    \webdata\www.kiezkicker.de\blog1\wp-uploads

    and

    \webdata\www.kiezkicker.de\blog2\wp-uploads

    are infact the same directory, because let’s say \webdata\www.kiezkicker.de\blog1\wp-uploads softlinks \webdata\www.kiezkicker.de\blog2\wp-uploads.

    When you go there with FTP etc. this would be the case as well. There should be no need for you to configure something in wordpress. Is there at all a configuration to name the upload dir? Isn’t it hardcoded?

    No, the path wasn’t hardcoded, you could change it via adminpanel.

    And it wasn’t a path – issue.

    It seemed that wordpress needs some data inside the database (which was different for each blog, of course) to find the files which are uploaded.

    So it wasn’t possible to share one upload- dir for different blogs cause the one database don’t realize what was uploaded with the other wordpress-blog.
    It just show the files which are uploaded with the currently wordpress-blog and hides the ones which are uploaded throw the other wordpressblog even if the file and dir are physically there (which was checked via FTP).
    Another issue was that you couldn’t upload some files via FTP and insert them after that in articles cause wordpress hides the files.

    And that sucks. It sucked to upload the same file twiece times (under different names, of course) in both blogs in the same dir to be able to use a photo which show the same in both blogs.

    Well, an option to select an already existing file on the webserver instead of uploading a new one would be a nice option here!
