Sidebars on the smaller screen and some untranslated text

For #1, what language (and variant, if applicable – i.e. Brazilian Portuguese or Canadian French) do you need? Let me know and I can provide guidance.

For #2 – could you provide a link to your site as well so I can take a look directly? I don’t think I’m seeing that gap on the Cerauno demo — do you see it there or only on your site?

I’m using Finnish as a secondary language. It should be 100 % translated, but there’s no Read me in the language file. So maybe it’s elsewhere. The primary language I’m going to translate because it doesn’t exist yet. (I’ll use the secondary language til I get it translated)

I can if there’s an email address to send the link, but I don’t want to put the link public yet. In Cerauno demo the second sidebar is located below the first, not side by side which I would like it to be. Maybe it’s the sidebar content (shape of it) that makes my sidebars to go like that. I think it should be fixed if I get them side by side.

Did you translate Cerauno into Finnish yourself using a .po editor?

The theme is only 84% translated on GlotPress:

Once they’re done, I’ll see about getting a Finnish translator to validate it.

At that point, this is what you’d need to do:

1. From the dropdown menu at the bottom left, choose the .mo file format option, and click Export to download the Finnish translation file and save it on your hard drive:
2. Rename the file cerauno-fi.mo on your hard drive.
3. Upload the file to your site in this spot in your WordPress install:

Oh, thank you for your answer! I just looked at the Loco translate plugin which said the theme is 100 % translated, didn’t understand that it wasn’t full source there. In Glotpress it seems to me that the theme is translated but all the translations aren’t proofread yet?

I’ve asked one of the Finnish validators to have a look at those strings. I’ll let you know as soon as they’re approved.

Thanks for your help! Now it shows 95 % translated, but the rest of the not approved strings (footer sidebar 1, 2, 3) propably aren’t necessary to the visitor of the site, so I can already download the language file with your instructions.

The primary language doesn’t exist in GlotPress. If I make a language file on my own using Poedit, should it be put in child themes folder so it wouldn’t get lost when updating the theme? And is there some special things how to get the translation work with child theme?

You’ll need to convert it to .mo (machine object) format when you’re done with it in Poedit.

ISO 639-1 used to be the default for language subdomains added to WordPress but the default of new locales has now changed to ISO 639-3. So, you’ll be able to name the file cerauno-krl.mo.

I have also requested that our team add Karelian to GlotPress to enable you to contribute translations there, if you wish. I’ll let you know when I hear back from them.

You could potentially use some custom CSS in order to achieve what you’re after.

To make sure I’m understanding you correctly: I can see that sidebar one and sidebar two on your site move underneath the main content when the screen is narrowed. Would you like these to be side by side when viewing your site on mobile or other smaller devices?

I could add a screenshot how it is now and edited picture how I would like it to be, but is there some email or something where I could send that image when it can’t be attached to the post?

Or I can try to explain. When you look at the Cerauno in wide screen, it puts both sidebars next to the content and sidebars next to each other. When the screen is narrower both sidebars goes below the content below each other (so the left sidebar is above, the right is below). I would like the sidebars go BELOW the content but NEXT to each other. Did that make sence? (It’s hard to me trying to explain these things in English when I’m not sure I use right words…)

And with the translation there’s something weird. When I put the translation files on place, in the home page it shows those “Newer posts” and “Older posts” text in my secondary language. And in single post page below the content the “Next post” and “Previous post” texts are in English. Is there somekind of fallback system therefore some texts are shown nontranslated (which I don’t understand because I checked that those strings are translated in my krl file). Maybe I’m still doing something wrong.

I also found this page where it is explained how to get the translation loaded from the child theme folder. How good choice would that be? (I’d find it simple that all my modifications would be in the child theme folder, so why not the translation files aswell)

And how much there is the content that is shown in the page that ain’t coming from the theme? (e.g. If I open single content page there are text in comment area that aren’t in the theme language file, “Your email address isn’t published” and that type of things). So if I want the visitors to see fully translated page do I need to translate also the full WordPress..? Is the translation files divided to administration page content and the online page content, so I don’t need to translate the whole core. (I’m not sure about the terms and I’m a bit of a hurry, but want to write this when it is all still in my mind, I hope I can write it understandably)

I’ve tested this on my own site and think I see what you mean! Would you be able to add the following CSS to see if it works for you?

To add custom CSS, firstly set up a child theme or activate a custom CSS plugin. If you have Jetpack then you can enable its Custom CSS module.

Enter the following snippet in either the editor for your CSS plugin or the style.css file of your child theme:

@media screen and (max-width: 750px)
.sidebar-left, .sidebar-right {
 clear: none;
 width: 50%;
}

If the above doesn’t work for you or needs some editing, then please provide a link to your site. It’s a lot easier for us to help with CSS customisations if we’re able to access your live site.

An English fallback is used by default. I believe the Loco Translate plugin or any other plugin you used to set up a secondary language may use that secondary language as the default too. I recommend checking in with their support teams directly as they’ll be in the best position to help with further questions.

As long as your translations have been added to /wp-content/languages/themes/ then they’ll be protected against core and theme updates, which means it’s not necessary to add them to your child theme. If you’d prefer for the translations to be in your child theme’s folders, though, then you’re absolutely free to try the method explained in that documentation.

Are you using a separate plugin, such as Jetpack, for your comments? If so, let me know and I can point you in the right direction.
