slides not loading

I have been using the free version for a long time I bought the regested version and things started going screwy. I need slides and tumbnails both with real text. I cheated and made slides with text to test the slider and it works fine. All the slides are background images. If i create a slde with layres it won’t even preview in the composer. What should I look for to diagnose?
Is it even possible to do what I want? take a look at this slider its what I am trying to duplicate https://change.org
