I use WordPress through my web hosting service. I would like to use and learn WordPress more.

The WordPress install documentation says to choose a text editor but I didn’t get an option for that when I installed WordPress on my hosting service. Right now I cannot press the tab key to indent text as pressing the tab key on my Mac or Windows 10 machine switches windows.

One solution I thought of would be to install WordPress on my laptop, develop and test my pages there, and then upload pages onto my site. My hosting provider says that that can be a difficult task so they recommended copy and paste after I login remotely.

Is that good idea / best practice? Any recommendations about a better solution?

    Thanks.

  • Hi there,

Just to clarify, are you aware that there is a built-in text editor with your WordPress install? For instance, when you create a new “page” it will open up the built-in text editor. You can select from either the “visual” or “text” options in the editor – you’ll see these two buttons to the top right. You can do a lot of text editing with this built-in editor.

Are you looking for a text editor to post/edit your posts, like dbking suggested? Or are you looking for something to edit php files such as wp-config file?

If you wanted to try to install WordPress on your laptop, read through the following page and see if it is something that you can do.

    Thanks to you all.

In answer to dbking, I have been using the built in editor and have a number of pages up, all look good. When editing them though I cannot insert a tab character. To tab text over I have to copy and paste a tab. On both my Mac and Windows 10 machines pressing the tab key does not insert a tab into the text. They switch panes and / or windows–most annoying and unproductive.

Citra: I’ll review the docs. I am technically experienced with serve installs, upgrades, and support but have zippo experience setting up web sites. I look forward to the challenge!

    Thanks to you all again.
