I have made several attempts to backup a small website, using the latest version of Duplicator. After the scan, everything returns as good with green checks.

Yet when I click on build I will get the following error message after a few minutes:
    Server Status: 0 -error
    Error Message:
Unknown Error – See Log File

The happens on every attempt I have made.

Yet checking the packages I ran, under the package details tab, I see Status: completed, and everything appears to be normal as if the package was made successfully. There is no error message, just seemingly completed packages.

Seems that a successful package was made and something does not shut off and keeps running. Eventually the server interrupts the build and shuts the whole thing down. Does this make sense?

  • Hey David,

Some budget hosts have there configurations setup to kill the apache process after 30 seconds yet they have a higher timeout for PHP to run. So most likely in your cause Apache is killing the open web-connection in the UI but on the back-end PHP still completes…

    Cheers~

    Cory,

Actually, to follow up on this, I have another site I also back up using Duplicator. Both sites are hosted on HostGator. The site I have an issue with is half the size in MB of the site with no issues.

The issues site takes 544.14 sec. to build and the archive file 28.04MB and the SQL data base is 2.07MB.

The no issues site takes 27.58 sec. to build and the archive file is 47.43MB and the SQL database is 3.02MB.

Does this tell you anything? I want to take this to HostGator and I am not sure what to tell them. Is it a server issue of some sort?

Why is this Theard marked as resolved? I have the same Problem and see here no resolved Tip-

JensGoro. Nice to know misery has company;-)

I marked it as resolved because it’s most like a server issue with the hosting company, in this case HostGator.

I have other sites on HostGator I manage, bigger sites, that zip with no issues very quickly. I think Cory explained it correctly, that the HostGator server is cutting off the interface while letting the build continue behind the scenes so to speak.

In this case, there is little Cory or Duplicator can do and resolving the issue lies with HostGator.

    Hey David,

Its definitely a bottle neck on the host. The thing that most people don’t realize is that to backup a site it takes a good chunk of cpu and memory and there really is no way to get around it. If the host offers mysqldump support that will go a long way it help with the database side, as far as zipping up the files you can filter larger files to help, at the end of the day if your on a host that is serving up 1000 other websites its going to be hit and miss on how the plugin performs, because of resource contention.

Most hosts offer upgrade plans for this exact reason. Upgrading to better plans help give you more resources are usually the best way to overcome these issues…

    Hope this helps!

Thanks, Cory. I can up the PHP memory so I think I will try that to resolve the problem.

No Problem… Hopefully your host can get you some more bandwidth…

    Cheers~
