Bulleted or numbered lists get an extra bullet on each bullet

When I use bulleted lists in a document, I get tons of spurious bullets, that make no sense. Any idea how to fix this? The problem show up in documents created with libreoffice and windows word 2010 and word 2013, with bullets, strange bullets, and numbers.
