• Help! I set up a page called Podcasts as the static front page and made several other pages child pages which could be clicked through to from the podcast page. However, the child pages, or most of them, seem to appear in one long run beneath the parent page, which a) looks odd and b) take a while to load.

If you look at my site, https://www.maritimeaccident.org, you’ll see what I mean.

I don’t have this problem which the https://www.wordpress.com site I also have.

Oh, and the sidebars are placed at the bottom, everything in one long strip.

Okay, solved this one – turned out that’s the effect one gets if both the posts page and the front page are the same under the read section. However, all posts have now disappeared.
