    Hello!

I have just bought a Steel plan and used “Maximum Lossy” compression on all pictures on my site. On average the JPEGs were shrinked by 30%, but I can see there is further room for compression. For example, using ImageOptim I manage to compress the image (without resizing) by 70% and still have an acceptable quality.

Is there a way to increase compression above “Maximum Lossy”? If not, would compressing the images a second time?on “Maximum Lossy” be a valid alternative?

    Thank you,
    Guido

You could try it, but I’m not sure you’d get much else. Max lossy (which uses TinyJPG) will usually save a bit more each time, but with each pass there is less savings, because their algorithms find less wiggle room to work with.

I’m going to email Kornel though and see what he’s using for lossy compression, see what I find out. Not that I want to add another lossy option, but I’m mostly curious to see what he is doing since ImageOptim claims to use mozjpeg, which is what EWWW’s API uses for lossless.

Thanks for your reply. If it can help your quest for knowledge, in ImageOptim I have used 70% lossy compression (JPEG).

I guess I will use FTP + ImageOptim in the future for radical compressions, and EWWW for the rest.

    Thanks.

Yeah, I discovered the same from talking with Kornel. ImageOptim just drops images to a set quality level. That’s exactly the type of compression EWWW never uses.

However, EWWW will allow you to set the jpeg quality level for WP image operations, like resizing (which will impact all the generated sizes).
