Pages Displaying Categories

What I want to do is create a page that enables me to break it down into each category with a header followed by the first X number of posts in that category underneath the header. What functions would I use to call the category references, excerpts, images and so forth?

Basically, it would like the front page of a site, except it would be broken down into sections based on category.
