• Not done anything to the install other than updates for months, but today I get a ‘page not found’ error when accessing domain.com/wp-admin. URL bar says ‘domain.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fdomain.com%2Fwp-admin’ . Looked using FTP and wp-admin/index.php IS present, as is wp-login.php.
Have tried renaming plugins folder, but couldn’t delete .htaccess file – have insufficient permissions to do anything other than view it. Site *appears* to be running okay, just can’t get into the back end!
    Any ideas please?

  • Try re-uploading all files & folders – except the root wp-config.php & .htaccess files and the wp-content folder – from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folders before uploading the new ones.

Deleted all contents apart from wp-content folder, wp-config.php, and .htaccess, reuploaded from fresh copy of WP. Same result ??
Domain seems to work fine (apart from obviously the plugins aren’t working as I’ve renamed the directory). Domain.com/wp-admin redirects to “domain.com/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fdomain.com%2Fwp-admin”. Attempting to go direct to domain.com/wp-login.php generates an error “The domain.com page isn’t working

domain.com redirected you too many times.
    Try:
    Reloading the page
    Clearing your cookies
    ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS”

Have you tried using another browser or another computer?

    Yup ??
Same in Chrome and IE, same on desktop, laptop, phone…

Can we see the site in question?

    Hmm – I got a 404 page for https://cuidhe-leathain.co.uk/wp-admin

    And

    The page isn’t redirecting properly

    for https://cuidhe-leathain.co.uk/wp-login.php

What happens if you switch back to the plain (default) permalink structure?

How would I change the permalink structure when I can’t get into the admin panel?

    Doh! Sorry – my bad.

What’s in your root .htaccess file?

I’ve just discovered that my host decided that domains on this server had been suffering access requests from large numbers of IP addresses, so they simply blocked access to that folder on all domains. And no, they didn’t bother letting customers know. I’m a little irked… Thanks for your help Esmi, and sorry to have wasted your time!

No problem. Glad to hear that you at least found the cause of the problem.
