changing color of asterisk to red when using placeholder function in Contact 7

Hello –
When using the PLACEHOLDER function of the Contact7 form, is there a means to change the color of the asterisk to red on any datafield configured as required? I tried various treatments of HTML and CSS in the shortcode, but nothing worked. Feedback and solutions welcome. See screenshots below.
