Feature request about Default Username

Hi there,
It’d be great if the default username wasn’t a full email address, as we have a member directory where people’s profiles are publicly displayed.
If possible, could there be an optional setting or default setting to only use the first part of their email as their display/nice name?
So it’d be:
steve123
instead of:
Viewing 2 replies - 1 through 2 (of 2 total)
Viewing 2 replies - 1 through 2 (of 2 total)
