Apologies if you have seen this in the Braintree plugin forum — I accidentally posted it there. //

Hi, I am new to WooCommerce and am setting up a shop on my WordPress site (localbag.net). Things are going well but I cannot figure out what I’m doing wrong for my tax settings and the Local Pick Up shipping option.

For example if I do a mock purchase and ask for flat rate shipping, it adds the correct amount of tax for the item at checkout. If instead I request a Local Pick Up it does not add any tax (which it should).

I know that the default tax rate for Local Pick Up is the tax rate of the shop’s base location, in my case, California. I do not have only one single California rate in my tax rates because there are a lot of different rates in California cities — I have all zip codes and their different rates. If I add a blanket CA rate (7.5%) it will conflict with all other cities’ tax rates at checkout right (regardless of shipping method)?

Is there a way to point Local Pick Up to my city’s tax rate (which is higher than the standard state tax rate)?

Many thanks for any ideas or suggestions, Cindy

    Here ya go: https://docs.woocommerce.com/document/local-pickup/#section-4

You can place this code in your child theme’s functions.php file, or using a code snippets plugin like mentioned here: https://www.skyverge.com/blog/add-custom-code-to-wordpress/

Caleb you are a LIFESAVER! Thank you so much – works perfectly!!!

Exactly what I needed too! Thanks for asking the question Cindy and thanks for answering it Caleb.

I was looking for a solution to this, too. I appreciate the code fix to the functions.php file, but I know this file will get overwritten if I update WooCommerce, so I try not to customize this file too much (it’s always wise to note what changes you make so you can add them back after updates).

To circumvent this, I chose Flat Rate as a shipping method (I suppose you could choose Free Shipping, too, but Flat Rate gives you the option to charge a fee if you want), set all costs to 0.00, and retitled it “Local Pickup”. I placed a test order just to be sure everything went smoothly. My solution works and my functions.php remains intact.

That said, if someone from the WooCommerce team thinks this isn’t a wise solution, I’d be curious as to why.
