I think I know the answer to this question, but I want to be sure. My server offers MySQL for an extra subscription price, which would double what I currently pay to host my website. Would I have to actually subscribe to it for Word Press to work on my server, or does Word Press have MySQL elements that just require a comaptible server?

I really want to keep hosting my blog on my own website. From what I hear I would prefer Word Press to Blogger’s ftp upload. But using Blogger doesn’t increase my overhead costs! ??

  • You are going to need MySQL on your server. WP needs a database to create the neccessary tables in that store your user information, blog entries, settings, etc.

Yes, you need to get the ability to use MySQL. WordPress need a MySQL database where it stores just about everything, from users to posts to comments and more. Not sure about how much you are paying, but I’ve been very happy with Hostmonster, and they offer a whole bunch of stuff (including MySQL) as part of their standard package, I believe. I have my domain and hosting through them. What do you mean by WordPress’s ftp upload (file structure or ftp client? not familiar with WordPress have an ftp client built-in.) Also, what is it that you mean when you when you say “I really want to keep hosting my blog on my own website”?

I was referring to Blogger’s ftp upload. Most people who use Blogger host their blogs on https://www.blogspot.com. I wanted my blog on my own website, so I use Blogger’s ftp transfer. All of the blog files are uploaded to my website’s server when I publish the blog.

My host charges $10 a month for basic hosting and another $10 a month for MySQL. It’s not a lot, but I’m not ready for the extra $120 a year yet. I’ll just have to upgrade my blog once my income allows for it.

    Thanks for the responses!

$10 a month for hosting and $10 extra for a database is a freakin’ lot.

I’d look into a better host. A Small Orange seems good.

I hope this is not too divergent for this forum, but I’m really new to this stuff. My hosting service is an ASP.net service. Could that be why it’s so much more expensive? I choked when I saw that Hostmonster offered MySQL as part of their standard package for less than I am paying for my standard package without it!

Possibly. Or possibly not. In my experience, price is not a matter of what type of services they offer, but how good their support is.

Also, WP works best on a Linux based webserver. ASP servers are Windows boxes, usually.
