Wot no Restore?

  • I was given a backup of a site made with this plugin and disappointed to find no restore option.

    I searched the web and found loads of posts of people with the same problem.

    Anyone who has done any kind of IT work will tell you a backup is USELESS without a rapid means to restore.

    I have used BackupBuddy which is OK, albeit that it struggles with very large sites and it is a cinch to restore, it also makes it easy to restore to a dev sub domain

    So now I have to rip the backwpup backup file apart, restore the database, hope that the standard WP_ prefix was used or else inspect the DB to figure out then go edit all the parts that refer to the old site domain.

    Probably half a days work in that alone and only then if it goes smoothly.

    If there were zero stars you would get zero.

    I would not recommend anyone uses this plugin

  • Dude, seriously, if you have done any sort of IT work (as you said), what are you complaining about? It takes me about 3 minutes to restore the site manually from the zip package on my local server. When I do it manually, at least I know what I’m doing as opposed to hoping that some “restore” service will mess something up.

    1. Unzip the zip file (…Masters degree required!…)
    2. Copy the contents up to your site (…that’s a Ph.D. level course…)
    3. Execute the SQL file into your DB (…that’s a Ph.D. + 5 years of internship…)
    4. Done.

    WHOA! That’s a hell of a lot of work, man!!! Why do you need a “restore” option for all this no brainer work!?

    Right. Because unzipping a file is a c-h-o-r-e …

    Dude, it’s a BACKUP. Whatever prefix you used, that’s the prefix the backup will have.

    Jesus! Sorry, but this is just plain whining about nothing.

    If the 3 steps above takes you half a day, maybe you should consider another job. (…no offense..but seriously…)

    Some people like to be in IT because they like to do all this silly commands in the right syntax etc etc, it makes them feel clever or that they earned their PHD.

    Some of us believe in working smarter.

    The sites I manage are gigabytes in size, so given a choice I would rather upload two files by FTP, type a URL answer a few questions (which are prefilled if I am restoring to the same domain) and it is just done. Then I can get on with some work that engages my brain rather than watching.

    Using the manual solution I have to employ a 3rd party zip solution if I am not using cPanel, I have to interrogate the WP-config file, oh and I have to hack the Options table because I am restoring to a different domain.

    As I said, in any backup procedure it is the restore that takes time, websites lose money every second they are down, so doing wasting all this time on tasks that can be automated is just plain stupid.

    Also as a product, this crappy plugin has to compete with other backup products that are infinately superior.

    I agree with RickC4.

    Ridiculous that it doesn’t have a RESTORE fn. IMO, it’s only half-a-plugin. The whole point of a plugin is to save time safely. Having to go to 3rd-party apps is just asking for more wasted time if not compounded wasted time.

    If I were to follow pentool’s suggestion, I might was well just skip the plugin altogether and reverse his process to perform the backup. It’s self-defeating.

    As for ChrisFo’s question, free is not the only option; it is great for freeloaders however…….
