• WPMU DEV makes some good, solid plugins, and provide excellent support. But, this plugin almost forces you to purchase their services before it becomes useful.

I understand WPMU needs to make money, but it seems to me that the way they promote their services in this plugin violates the www.ads-software.com TOS as there is very little that can be done without purchasing the WPMU DEV Anti-Splog API key.

My suggestion, be less forceful in pushing usage of the API, and instead, rely upon the paid services to motivate buyers.

All that said, this low rating is for the sales methods embidied in the plugin. The WPMU plugins have and do work well.

  • Hey Kirkward,

    Thanks for your feedback here.

I just want to mention that all of the options within the General Settings section don’t require an API key and will work without a membership ?? that includes pattern matching as well. It’s really only the 1 feature that requires our API – using our servers to check dynamically check each site. The rest of the features will all work as expected.

As for the sales part, having looked at it now I do think this could all be made clearer on the plugin page, plus a cleaner message on the admin to let you know exactly what features need the upgrade and which ones you can use. Really appreciate you bringing this up and I’ll pass it along and see if we can get this improved to avoid the same issue in the future.

Enjoy the rest of your day Kirkward!

    Cheers,
    Tyler

    Okay Ratings Readers,

I told you the support was good. Seems they do monitor these things and work to defend their brand. And, they quite often make adjustments to respond to market feedback. Note that the method that the sales pitch was implemented was the primary reason for other low ratings. There is almost nothing in any of these ratings dissing the product itself. Just that the sales pitch was so overpowering.
