I tried a number of different backup plugins before settling on this one. I have not tried the premium version and I haven’t used the remote storage functions, so I can’t comment on those.
Several things I particularly appreciate about the standard version:
- It gives you a lot of options without being convoluted to use. For example, if you have a lot of posts and comments every day and want frequent database backups, but don’t need to back up all your files each time, you can do that. Excluding directories is also easy, so you can avoid backing up bulky cache files.
- The plugin gives you a lot of information about what it’s doing during a backup and there are some useful troubleshooting tips for handling common issues.
- Restoration is simple and straightforward.
- Managing previous backups is pretty easy.
- All the iterations I’ve used have been reliable. With a lot of plugins, there are periodically updates that break something until the developers note the bug and figure out how to fix it. Updraft hasn’t given me any problems like that; the only times it’s stopped working have been due to something unrelated to the plugin itself. With a backup utility, reliability is kind of an important selling point!
The only issue I can see, which the developers have been upfront about, is that it might not be the best choice for sites with very low traffic because wp-chron might not always run when needed. On the other hand, in those cases, you can probably get away with running manual backups if needed.
