• I’ve been looking into making my website into a wordpress site. I know the basic html, css but my site is static so I only know a little about php and databases. I’m getting ready to install WAMP to play around with WP.

When and if I do make a WP site, I’m going to choose one theme where I can just change background colors and images and keep the same basic layout.

Will I have to update my theme everytime there is a new version of WordPress? I see a lot of people having problems upgrading to the latest WP version.

I’m wondering if my WP site is going to be too hard for me to maintain with frequent versions coming out every few months. I can figure things out and read tutorials but it seems a little difficult and time-consuming for someone who isn’t an experienced webmaster.

A little advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

No. Upgrades do not bother the theme unless your theme is constructed incorrectly. I have had the same “default” theme for 4 or 5 upgrades.

You see people having problems because this is a support forum. Most people do not have problems with WP.

There is a learning curve but you do not have to know php or much about a db (except the name, password and where it is). I came from an html site. WP takes much less time than I was spending trying to update the html daily.

    Thank you. That’s a relief.

When you say, “Upgrades do not bother the theme unless your theme is constructed incorrectly.” I’m guessing that the theme should be XHTML Validated to avoid such problems. Is there anything else I should look for in a theme so I can avoid problems down the line? There are so many WP theme sites, it’s overwhelming sometimes but I want something that looks good too.

I’v looked into a lot of CMS and blog choices and decided on WordPress because of the community support. I really appreciate your response.

I’m looking to switch before my site gets to big. Thanks for your help.

I would think that there are very few themes that might not work with an upgrade. Themes are primarily tied to style sheets which are never touched by an upgrade. But that is a good thing about WP – you can try a theme and if it doesn’t work, change it pretty easily.

You can basically change any theme to what you want but it is always better to find one you like, that will require just a little tweaking to give you the look/feel you want for your site.
