• For some reason every time I go to update a plugin or install a new one it says (or a variation on this)….

    website is lesleysgirls.com and I am using 4.6.1 wordpress

    @lesleysgirls,

    Does the same error occur each time you try to update a plugin or this occurs each time with the same plugin?

    Same error almost:
    Update Failed: <!DOCTYPE html> Maintenance Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.
    Can’t update my plugins or my theme after wordpress updated.

    @mr-peri, @lesleysgirls,

    Weird. Have you installed any maintenance mode plugins?

    I did a quick search and found another thread with a similar issue. Checkout the comment by @ktolliver and that should help both of you.

    Nope, only updated wordpress to 4.6.1

    Checked out the thread. It makes sense if the error is that the file is missing, which is the case in that thread, but my error doesn’t give a file missing error.
    It’s doing this on ALL my sites I have updated to wordpress 4.6.1. Sometimes it takes me 2 days to get everything updated again. Very frustrating.

    It’s with all plug-ins on mine, I have no ideas what is going on! It did it from day one though I think when I first tried to install WooCommerce.

    Sometimes they will eventually install.

    I wonder if it was how wordpress was initailly installed on the site?

    @mr-peri, @lesleysgirls,

    Do check if you have a file called maintenance.php either in the root director or in the root /wp-content/ directory?

    I’ll get acess to the file from my web guy- what do I need to do if there is?

    @lesleysgirls,

    It appears to me that there is some problem with that file. So remove the file (remember to backup the file) and try updating the plugins.

    References:

    In my case it was admin-ajax.php not being able to do it’s thing because the server load was too high, caused by admin-ajax.php. This is visible in the browser console, everything goes great until the above error with the DOCTYPE declaration included and that’s when you see the error in the console. The front end is locked until I delete the .maintenance file or give it about 5-10min.

    Would be great if there was a more efficient way to throttle this file’s activity when needed…in the past 2 weeks I’ve dealt with 3 different sites on different hosts having issues with this file yet totally all completely different issues.

    Instead of trying to do 1000 tasks in 1 attempt, maybe it’s best to do 1 task broken out into 1000 individual attempts.

    Just disable mod_security option on your server…

    Best regards
