• I’ve not seen this error before and am a little concerned. With this one site, I get the error when I try to get to get to the “Scan” screen and the firewall screen. All I get is a blank screen with the following text on it:

The requested URL was rejected. If you think this is an error, please contact the webmaster.
    Your support ID is: 9641638101796981446

Note: I can access all other screens:

I tried deactivating the plugin, then reactivating it – no change. I’ve also uninstalled it, and reinstalled it. I get the same error.

    Any suggestions??

  • Hi LMD99,
I would suggest getting in contact with your web host regarding this specific message, they should be able to tell you some possible reasons that caused this issue. It could be their firewall rules are blocking access to some files on the server.

    Keep me updated,
    Thanks.

I’ve got more than a dozen sites hosted on the same server, and scanning any of those sites doesn’t produce any errors.

BTW – who am I supposed to notify of this part of the error message?

    Your support ID is: 9641638101926928756

This error message format isn’t related to Wordfence for sure, that’s why I recommend contacting your web host about this error asking for more clarification about this server response. It could be something related to this single website you have, it doesn’t have to be replicated on all websites on the same server.

Also, I searched this error message for you on the internet and these are some suggestions/tests that might lead to resolve this issue:
    – Test if you are getting the same message on different browsers, also try checking that on different PCs/devices.
    – Try clearing your browser cache/cookies.
    – If you are using a VPN, try deactivating it and re-check this issue.

But again, your web host should investigate this issue in detail and come back to you with possible reasons/fixes.

    Thanks.

    Thanks for your response.

I’ve tested this on two different machines, cleared cache, and tried three browsers and get the same error for this one site. I’m not on a VPN either.

Firstly, I know if talk to our hosting support on this, they’ll ask if any other sites are getting that error, and I’ll have to say no.

Secondly, WordPress isn’t a one-click install where we are either. So, they don’t support third party apps, like WordPress. They usually do try to help with WordPress to some degree, but until they offer the one-click install, they’ll only go so far.

Finally, they’ll say if it works on my other 15 sites, it should work on this site too. And, I should contact the plugin support.

    And the circle begins again.

Alright, I’ll try them, but the error message won’t mean anything to them, correct, as even the support ID is a WordFence reference/error, correct?

Yes, this support ID is not a Wordfence reference/error.

I re-checked this issue for you and I can see this message is related to an app used by network managers called “F5” to make sure your HTTP requests are always safe/secure, please check this support topic on their website.

At least for now we know where does this message come from, so I think your network manager or your ISP (or whoever is running F5 security app) should help you further with this issue using the “support ID” mentioned.

    Thanks.

The hosting admins can access the Wordfence tabs (even the Scan tab) in the WP CP without issue – but they use a different ISP than I.

Thinking it’s an ISP issue, I called my ISP support. They say if it’s a page internal to WordPress and it’s a plugin, that its out of their hands and to contact the plugin author. Or, they said, call Microsoft for help.

    Hi LMD99,
the message is sent by something called “BIG IP platform”. This is server software so it is definitely something you need to check with your host. You can read more about it here.

    Good luck!

Thanks for that link. It may help to validate the issue I’m experience to our server admins.

So, I have contacted our server admin support again, but now I’m armed with this new information (the link). And, this time when accessing the domains experiencing this issue from their end, they did experience the same error message.

The odd thing is that 12 other WP domains using the same theme, WordPress version and current WordFence plugin, in the same hosting environment do not experience that error. I will post support’s conclusions when they’ve investigated the issue and report back to me on their findings.

Our security support came back saying they looked in the backend and said “this is a PHP function warning messages masked as a generic error message generated from the plugin in question.”

And then the “we don’t support 3rd party plugins, yada, yada”. Leaving me in the position to not be able to do a normal scan of the site files.

The server security support guys indicate the error looks like it’s being generated as a result, or from line 247 in the wordfenceScanner.php file. Something about non-Unicode characters in the file name.

Any idea if this line of code can be changed so I can get the scanner function working??

    Hi LMD,
Okay so their server software prevents php error messages from being displayed and they show this screen everytime instead. Quite an unusual setup I must say but then we at least know why you are seeing that screen.

I am assuming there is a file on that system that has some weird characters in it and that this is causing some odd bug. This would explain why you are getting it on that WordPress install but none of the others. However, to know if we can fix it I would need to see the actual error message in full.

I have one page on that site and the page path title is shown as “Home / Members / Alex Sándor Vezér” and, the text used on the page is “Alex Sándor Vezér”, so I have a feeling the accent over the “á”, and the “é” just might be causing the issue.

However – I cleared cache, after removing the accent over the letters on the page and saving the change, but am still getting the error message when trying the WF scan function.

See the snapshot Wordfence log of error

    (@lmd99)

Ok, I disabled WF and removed the data and tables, so now, it appears to be scanning. I don’t know if it was the characters with the “accent”, or the WF table data was corrupt. Either way it’s working.

Now, how do I get rid of the “Live Updates Paused” every time I have a scan going and I click off that window to go on to something else while the scan is performing? This is a bit of a pain as I have to watch the scan complete before doing anything else.

    Please advise.

LMD, whatever would have been printed in the scan results window while live updates is paused should be written there when you activate the tab again by clicking in the window.

I can’t tell you which character is causing issues and in what context without seeing the actual PHP error message. Your host has clearly located the error message so if they can send it to you I can help you look at it.

The “stat failed for” means the file was found when starting the scan but somehow disappeared while the scan was running. Is your actual site in a folder called “test”?
