Hello, I just recently installed WordPress on the site and when I try to log in, I get a page that says this:

The website declined to show this webpage
    HTTP 403
    Most likely causes:
This website requires you to log in.

    Can anyone help?

  • There must be something wrong on that server/website with the permissions.
    403 error = forbidden site/page.

WordPress doesn’t have that kind of setting out of the box, so it is something server related.

How do I know what permissions to set for which files/folders in my wordpress directory on the server?

Normally, you shouldn’t need to set the permissions on a correctly set up server.

Files should be 644 and folders 755.

I use uplinkearth, and there isn’t a place to put actual numbers as permissions. You have to check the boxes. which boxes would I have to check for it to be equivalent to 644 and 755??

    Here’s a screenshot:

    What is there that’s 644.

alright, then… this is all default settings because I didn’t touch any of the permissions. if it’s already set as 644, then everything should be correct. So why is it still giving me the 403 error if the permissions are set correctly?

    Time to call your host…

Well I’ve talked to the host and they said that all of my permissions are set correctly and that there must be something wrong with my blog or the username and password are incorrect. I followed the installation instructions on the wordpress website exactly and only modified what I was supposed to modify in the wp-config.php file.
I reset my password and got a new one mailed to me and tried it again, however I still get the 403 error no matter what.

Is there anything else I can do?

You may try to ask these guys to install it or take a look at it:

Acutally, I think I might have found something. On the control panel where I log into my blog, at the very top it says: “Back to xxx blog” and there’s a link that goes here: https://www.exodus-studio.com/blog whcih gives me a 403 error. However, if I put index.php at the end of the link, then it takes me to my blog home like it’s supposed to: https://www.exodus-studio.com/blog/index.php . For some reason, it’s not adding the index.php at the end of this link. Which file would I need to modify so that it will link to index.php?

I’m hoping by fixig this that it will also fix the other 403 error.

PS. I would like to try and do this on my own if I can rather than getting it done using the install4free people since I really don’t feel comfortable giving out my username and password to my website to people I don’t know.

Hey! I’m one of those guys. :>)
    Maybe I can help.
    Who is your host ?
Is it a windows server ?

    My webhost is uplinkearth (www.uplinkearth.com)
    Yes, I believe it’s a Windows server.

Any insight on this? I’ve been trying to figure it out all day long. I even uninstalled and re-installed it but I still keep getting the error.

    I’ve discovered this site: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/FAQ_Installation#What_is_the_403_error_I_get_when_trying_to_see_my_site.3F

However, I’m wondering what ‘control panel’ they are talking about? The Control panel on my Uplinkearth site? or does WordPress have a control panel? This wasn’t explained clear enough for me. If anyone has any insight on this, it would be much appreciated.

The Control panel on my Uplinkearth site?

    Yes.
