• After testing the recent Jetpack update on a test site with no issues, this morning I pushed the update onto all our client sites. All the sites I have checked so far of those clients got a push to their Facebook, Twitter and Google+ accounts for a post with the URL: https://www.example.com/-0001/uncategorized

The content of the push was some random photo on the 404 page and the 404 page contents. I am now in the process of cleaning these up. Any ideas on what went wrong.

Hmmm looks like the test site also had the same issue but I missed the bad tweets.

Thanks for the report! Was the shared URL example.com, or was it the actual site’s URL?

Could you also post the site URL here, so I can have a look at our logs to try to understand what happened?

Thanks Jermey. The URL was the sites URL so it ended up getting the sites 404 error page content. Here is one example site, used for testing. It pushed a tweet after the upgrade on the 18th. https://www.jamas.net

Actually looks like the all pushed a new update out 12 hours ago. I thought it was originally caused by the upgrade but it seems something is pushing an update out every 24 hours. Link for the https://www.jamas.net site pushed to twitter was https://www.jamas.net/-0001

I may have to disable Jetpack across a bunch of sites unless there is a quick fix. It takes a long time to clean these up on each account.

That’s interesting; I can’t find any logs of Publicize sending any tweets for that site in the past 48 hours.

Could you go to this page, and check if other apps have permissions to tweet on your behalf? Could any of those apps be posting those updates?

Thanks for checking Jeremy. I have checked all the various accounts, the only thing in common is the app WordPress.com by Automattic. The fact that the same post is being pushed to Google+ and Facebook pages makes me really suspect the Publicize feature. I checked the permission for Google+ apps and only WordPress was listed. Also all the sites that we don’t use Publicize on have been fine.

If you don’t mind checking here are a few more sites that have made Facebook, Google+ and Twitter pushes within the last 48 hours.

    https://www.slsc.ca
    https://www.sturgeonpoint.com
https://www.capitaldining.ca <— This website only uses Publicize for Google+ and Facebook. Both of which got the garbage post. Twitter didn’t get the garbage post, not setup up under Publicize.

I have about 10 others I can list if those don’t turn up anything.

    Thanks for the extra details.

I can’t find anything in our logs, but I may be missing something here. As you mentioned, the fact that it happens on multiple networks is odd, and certainly points to Publicize.

Do you use a plugin or a function in your theme that may be creating Custom Post Types, or using the Custom Post Type functionality behind the scenes? If so, could you tell me more about the tool you use for that?

I am also seeing posts being made for the home page of each site Jetpack is enabled + connected to social media. All sites with jetpack + facebook get a middle of the night post of the home page of the blog.

    EDIT: two posts I think

@greghl Could you please start your own thread, as per the Forum Welcome?

Could you also give me some examples there, so I can take a closer look?

    Thank you!

Jeremy – I have submitted a support form with the details of TWO sites which are connected through the same jetpack login (mine) – to the same facebook page – both sites (on difference servers) – have posted TWICE since midnight mountain time. One was about an hour ago, the other was 7 hours ago.

@jamas I noticed that you use Broken Link Checker on all those sites. Could you try to deactivate the plugin, and let me know if it helps?

@greghl Do you happen to use that plugin as well? Could you try and see if the problem remains without it?

Broken link checker is on the 2 sites I gave you but NOT on a 3rd site we have that is definitely doing it (vc-cycling.co.uk).

fyi – we’re using infinitewp to manage these sites, not sure if @jamas is using the same management tool.

a fourth site I have that’s going it is withlovefromloveland.com – that does have broken link checker – will disable on that site now.

Wordfence is common to the sites I’ve found doing this also.
