• When I try to make an idea submission, it keeps dumping my text, with a message saying “Slow down you move too fast”.
    I allocate time to send in some ideas, and then it wastes my time.

    I try to find a way to tell you about this, and then I have to hunt around for a correct channel.

    Website design system, uses a labyrinthian approach to customer handling – lesson to be learnt.

    Fix up the ideas submission system please.

  • It looks like you probably haven’t posted anything in quite a while, and it appears at least not since the forums were upgraded.. I would bet your submission may simply be caught in the spam queue for some reason. I’m sure it will probably be caught shortly and most likely published.

    Nope, nothing in spam or pending.

    It’s a different forum and I’m looking now.

    Don’t post so quickly.

    Fix up the ideas submission system please.

    It is fixed. The forums have an automated system to combat spam. When you post that frequently then you match the profile of an automated attack. The time between posting is 30 seconds and that’s not bad.

    Thanks guys.
    Solved but maybe not quite –
    I have now been able to submit more than one post in a sitting.
    So it works much better than before.

    But I think a careful check should be made of the actual timing parameter.
    This because my posts were manually typed in and therefore took some minutes to complete.

    However the post was begun, immediately after the previous submission.
    (make notes on shortfalls and problems when using a plugin – then make submission while memory is fresh)
    So it was minute between “post submit” and “post submit”.
    But no more than 30 seconds between “post submit” and “new post starting”

    But also of note.
    having had the bad experience, but wanting to not loose the thoughts,
    I typed them into text editor and saved. It also meant I could copy and paste, loose the submission, but not the text.

    But it was then minutes between a “post submit” and “new post starting”,
    but only seconds between “new post starting” and “post submit”.
    And that did not work either.

    So the present timing may be working best, but the actual definition of what it applies to in the detection process may not be properly set in the algorithm.

    Additional Convenient way to avoid problems;
    If Captcha is as good as it is supposed to be, then that could be used to allow a by-pass of the auto prevention of a detected possible spam attempt in the submit process, by use of the captcha confirmation.

    It did it again, just before.
    After I’d typed in a suggestion for admin UI and Useability.
    It was in the “Ideas” submission page.

    Bit rude really.
    and very inconvenient.

    What’s the bet the post still works in here though.

    Oh it did.
    And does this one work a few tick later.
    Let’s see.

    Right.
    The problem is when using the ideas link in the footer.

    Don’t drop the ideas link – it is very important to capture ideas at the time of inspiration.
    But maybe also captcha them aswell if you think you are getting too many ideas too fast.

    Just thought I might comment on ;
    “The forums have an automated system to combat spam. When you post that frequently then you match the profile of an automated attack. The time between posting is 30 seconds and that’s not bad.”

    1) “The forums have an automated system to combat spam.”
    I agree it is very combative.
    But it is not too clever at deciding what it will take a swing at.
    Nor does it hold back its punches.

    2) “When you post that frequently then you match the profile of an automated attack.”
    ‘frequently’ – is a term you use to refer to the method that the algorithm uses to make decision. One might hope that the algorithm is correct in how it makes decisions based on time, rather than content. Because in my case, it is dumping ideas, without any thought or cognizance of its own. It hasn’t even been review by a stupid person (not that we would hope to find one in these forums). But somebody was clever enough to prgram the stupidity in to this rejection system.

    and there is more …

    3) Quarantine
    Sounds like there is no quarantine in the system.
    Surely if somebody “is” abusing the system (preferably unprovoked by the “system”), then it might be useful to have a record of it. None of my other dumped submissions seem to have made it, because I made a few, after the first dumping, before I figured out that it wasn’t any thing I was doing, and that the system really was not accepting input.
    Quarantine, would also make sure that nothing of importance would get lost, even if it was delayed.

    4) Confirmation of submission
    When a submission is made, then the text is redisplayed back to the submitter.
    This means that it has been collected. But I had not been presented with that; the system was dumping the content without re-displaying it back to me.
    Pretty poor systemic behavior.
    This redisplay of the text could even be used to foil spammers, by preventing them from a next entry, until after the text of their last submission has been re-displayed.

    5) But there’s another lost opportunity with this text re-display;
    it could allow a few minutes to make a last minute retro-edit.
    Why is this handy/
    Because in long submissions, the layout and previous paragraphs are not as visible as the re-displayed text (which is allowed a whole page).
    So when the submitter gets to see a full page view, then they are prevented from making a “re-view edit” of their submission.

    say

    6) What about allowing the text entry box for a submission, to be almost a full page long, or at least larger. Not much else of the screen is needed while in edit mode.

    And
    “The time between posting is 30 seconds and that’s not bad.”
    It would be really nice if this (rule) could be stated some how, before a user inadvertently infringes it. say just after the submit button has been pressed, or pop-up box, or small note beside the button, or in bold at the top of the submission.
    or
    On attempting a following submission, to have a displayed countdown, that says something like “Counting down till your next allowable submission time”.
    or
    we can make submissions, and they go in a queue and the system can pull out the next one from that queue when ever it likes, but (all of the) users are not forced to delay (all of) their own submissions because of this. Possibly have a limit to the number that are allowed to be queued up at any time, with a nice message to warn what the limit is, and how many are left to go.

    Thank you for telling me there is a 30 second gap.
    Does everybody else know that?

    There might be some folk thinking – “well how often does somebody want to make more than one submission at a time?” Good question.
    May be not many do, but of those that tried, how many got their messages through?;
    Probably very few.
    Is that a loss?
    May be we could say “I don’t know”,
    which might be accurate.

    I have been talkative, but hope that this has inspired some thought in to how systems can be created and thought of as being smart, just because they are automated.

    Any thoughts?

    Just got dumped trying to submit via “ideas” again.
    Definitely having a problem there;

    “Forums” may have been updated.
    “Ideas” may be disconnect.
    Are the two the same thing, or does one feed in to the other, or largely independent?
