• What is a good page size? I know it’s best to have one that is as small as possible, but what is small?

    Is 3 MB good?

    How long is a string?

A good page size is one that conveys your message, is visually attractive, and loads quickly enough that your visitors don’t think “what a slow site.”

    Dear Steve,

    Thank you for the reply.

I am not sure what you are asking though. I will try to find out more about a string.

What I meant was whether a 3MB page is considered a heavy load page…

To be honest, page size isn’t everything. Another major factor would be the number of elements that need to be loaded. I usually use the “Net”-tab in the plugin “Firebug” for Mozilla Firefox to analyze the independent elements and find out which ones are slowing down the loading speed.

If you like, I can look into this for you. Can you indicate which site this concerns?

Here are a couple of services that you can use to analyse your site and provide advice:

3Mb sounds a lot to me, particularly if you want to reach a wide audience. Website users generally have little patience for slow sites.

Thank you for the input. If you want to look into it, the website is https://attireclub.org.

When I analyze it with different tools what I usually get is that it has many pictures, which it does, but I don’t know why this should be such a problem, I mean in that case, shouldn’t every magazine website and grid-theme website be slow and heavy…?

Let me know what you think!

Yeah good. Loaded quick enough for me. Not tried it on mobile when in the countryside!

Load speed is going to depend on server hardware, and a host may have a variety of servers of different vintage. For shared hosting, speed will depend on how many other websites are hosted on the same server and what those sites are doing. I’ve seen over 1000 sites on one server and that may have an impact on load speed.

Big sites will have dedicated servers and maybe load sharing among several servers.

    Thank you for the response!

What do you mean by “load sharing among several servers”?

    Is that CDN?

    Thank you!

Yes CDN. A company like ebay will have many servers and software which directs the user to the server nearest and/or under least workload.

Nevermind, Lorro already replied while I was composing my initial answer.
