• The .xml export file which is being saved to my system for importing to my new wordpress blog (i) doesn’t contain all of my recent files (stops at April 4th, 2008) and has the following error message at the end of the actual file:

======================================================

The XML page cannot be displayed

Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

As a result, I haven’t yet been able to import all of my old files to my new blog.

Don’t know if the problem is actually in the ‘import’ or the ‘export’ phase.

Any help resolving this problem would be very much appreciated.

• Curious, were you using IE when you exported XML from WP install? Only asking because I encountered that warning once when client exported XML when using IE. It might have been with firewall, security settings or whatever. When I asked him to try to go to website and export from Firefox, the XML export and import to new install worked well. Hope it works for you.

Nah.

Doesn’t work with Firefox either.

How is your SQL backup?

I am having similar problem. Exports OK, (5mb file) when it imports I it either crashes or get message: Unable to create directory
/mounted-storage/home34b/sub001/sc27956-WQEU/website/1/wp-content/uploads/2008/08.
Is its parent directory writable by the server?

Tried using IE and Opera. Any other way of uploading file/ I have a lot of work/content to load.

kendal,

Your issue is entirely different, it sounds like you need to have the permissions on your uploads or wp-content folder increased in order to have them written to.

Try logging in via ftp and modifying their permissions or having your hosting provider handle it on your behalf if they’re open to it.

I’m not sure about the SQL backup.

What I ended up doing to solve the import problem was:

1. Split the original Import File into four (4) parts.
2. Cut & Pasted everything up to the first ‘
’ in split file #1 into the beginning of splite file #2, #3 and #4.
3. Cut and Pasted

‘

’

from the end of splite file #4 into the end of split file #1, #2 and #3.
4. Saved each of the new split files (i.e. #1-4).
5. Imported each of the new split files.

=======================================================

This seems to have done the trick except for:

A) None of the existing video clips are displaying properly on the new version of my blog.

(e.g. the text is there …

[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHoZ_gvdmNM]

but not the vid clip itself)

B) The links from my original blogroll have not been imported.

C) The number of items associated with each ‘Category’ in the Sidebar hasn’t been imported. [i.e. the (#) on the right of each category item is missing]

If anyone can help me out with A, B & C … that would be very much appreciated. ??

For Future searchers:

a) Media/attachments including images and thumbnails are NOT exported, they’re left behind. Your best bet would be to copy your uploads folder/zip it up and transfer it to your new host.

b) Blogroll links are managed using a standard called OPML. OPML is basically a list of links. The URL to get your OPML file is yourdomain.com/wp-links-opml.php Copy and paste what gets displayed into a new text file so that you can either use a plugin to load the file on the new site, or use it as a reference for manually adding the links…

c) That sounds like a widget setting (show count) like show rss…

Keep in mind that you should check your XML file to see if it ends in ‘

’

If it doesn’t, as is very often the case, the XML file is corrupt and not all of your content was exported! Personally, I have never managed to export an uncorrupted XML file. Given the opportunity, I’d go with a db dump (SQL).

Update: When you import, there is an option to download/transfer the thumbnails, doh! The end result is your posts remain intact.

I used a couple of plugins that were useful. They may help people who need to move domains (e.g. mydomain.wordpress.com to mydomain.com).

Once the import is complete and you’ve taken your first backup (in case these plugins/you wreck things):

Search-RegEx for replacing this.that.com with this.com

or, Velvet Blues Update URL

Broken Link Checker which works in the background to find links that need attention

and

Broken Image Management

I’m sure there are more but these allowed me to relax a bit.

Cheers.

Okay I just finished splitting the files for a new blog I’m trying to start.

Did it exactly like I did it before with a different new blog.

However, it’s working the same way this time.

Can anyone tell me why I’m now getting the following error message?

———————————————————–
Import WordPress
Sorry, there has been an error.

The uploaded file could not be moved to D:\webs\xxxxx#0001\wordpress/wp-content.
———————————————————–

Thanks, in advance.

The specific problem I am now having is this:

When trying to import an .xml file into another new www.ads-software.com blog … which is running on a Virtual Windows Server … from a wordpress.com blog I am getting a message that says,

“An error has occurred.

Not able to move file to:

D:\webs\webroot\userid\wordpress/wp_content.”

and not the file is not importing at all.

———————————-

According to my hosting service, that is the correct path and the file should be importing properly.

———————————-

As well … if I FTP the import .xml file directly into the wp_content folder it is having no effect whatsoever either.

———————————-

Any help would be sincerely appreciated.
