    Hi there, all –

I’m currently switching my site over to HTTPS, which requires some tampering with WordPress, even if it is just a bit.

    – and then it struck me: During the installation process, Duplicator rewrites the URLs based on the destination location, per the installer prompt before deployment – so would it be possible to simply input a new HTTPS URL there, and have Duplicator take care of the rewrite?

Thank you in advance for any advice/help on this.

    Hey @jesperw,

That is the correct approach. However if your going to have a mixed solution such as Admin SSL only front-end HTTP then you will want to your the values in the wp-config.php that control SSL only for Admin…

    Hope that helps~

    Hi Cory,

It totally does – and since I’m going to go for HTTPS across the board I guess it’s simply a matter of doing as I cunningly deduced.

Thank you very much for your guidance, to say nothing of your creation and maintenance of a positively brilliant plugin!!

Quite welcome – I did it, and it worked like a charm, and I passed the approach on to my hosting provider, who said he’ll be passing the advice on to other customers.

    Hi there,

I am getting ready to move a WordPress site that is http to https. I won’t be changing webhosts or domain names, just going to an https version. Bluehost is offering free SSLs for WordPress sites. From a workflow perspective, do I first do a Duplicator backup of the non-https live website, then get the SSL installed, then go through the Duplicator process to replace the existing installation? I am not a techie, so it’s hard to wrap my head around this…

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Hi Barb –

The way I did it, I went the whole way first, installing and confirming the SSL certificate, and then I made a Duplicator package and installed it directly after, the only change being the HTTPS url during roll-out.

By the way, also remember to change the url to HTTPS in WP’s general settings, or things like uploaded media (after the HTTPS install) will get an non-HTTPS url, causing your site to not have a green padlock. I only noticed that detail a few days later, when the padlock on my site went red.

Thank you, Jesper, for such a quick reply!

A few clarification questions I have: Before making the duplicator package, do I change the URL in WP’s general settings or do I do that at the time I am resaving my permalinks after the Duplicator rollout?

Just curious, did you “replace” your http website with the https version on the same domain and web host as I plan on doing? Did you blow away everything (as in the database and wordpress install) prior to installing the Duplicator files? Or did you overwrite the existing WP install? Not being very technical (but knowing enough to get myself in trouble), I apologize if I sound like a dimwit!

Also, I assume you are using the free version of Duplicator vs. the Pro?

You’re welcome – less quick this time, but here we go ?? :

    – yes, change the URL after saving permalinks, after installing, not before packaging (at least I didn’t). Dunno if it’s required to save them again after, since I came across this later as I mentioned… hopefully Cory will chime in if he knows!

    – yes, I replaced my website entirely, letting Duplicator overwrite the database.

    – and yes, free version.

    Thanks, Jesper!

I’ll let you know how it goes…

    Hi

I just backup old site that was HTTP, and try to upload it to new witch already had old site with HTTPS. For testing new things…

I get HTTP ERROR 500 after login? It’s missing SSL… and I try to put HTTPS Redirection RewriteRule in htaccess but no help.
