• Since updating to the new 4.7, my website at https://vegburge.com/ is totally down. When I try to navigate to the main page or log in to admin, all I get on the screen is this:

Fatal error: Call to a member function do_all_hook() on a non-object in /www/sites/058/16d/www.vegburge.com/web/wp-includes/plugin.php on line 837

Fatal error: Call to a member function do_all_hook() on a non-object in /www/sites/058/16d/www.vegburge.com/web/wp-includes/plugin.php on line 837

I’ve been through the master list and tried the following things:

clear your browser’s cache and cookies
Deactivating all plugins and mu-plugins through FTP

I’m really not savvy with this stuff so that was about as much as I could manage by reading through guides, the rest of the options on the list might as well be in Greek for as much as I understand them. The only other one I could do was to change the theme to twentysixteen, but of course I don’t even have twentysixteen installed, so that wasn’t going to be much help. I would try deleting all but the theme I use, but then I don’t remember which one I use anyway as I last changed this stuff probably a year and a half ago at least.

I have no idea what to do and my blog is completely down. I have back-ups from last week but that would lose me a post and I don’t want to do that if there’s another way. I’ve got a post due for tonight so this is stressing me out.

  • Hello Vegburgerhi,

Sorry for the problem with your website. Apparently, this issue was addressed in an earlier support post. They did the same thing (upgrade to 4.7) and had the same error. Please see this post for a resolution of the issue that may work for you.

    Regards,
    Arnel C.

Sam problem here. Even disabled all the plugins and themes and put it in safe mode. Plain vanilla WordPress 4.7 crashes with a memory error.

Arnel – Thanks for that link but it lists the things I have already discussed above. I don’t know how to do what is being suggested without destroying my whole site even further. As I said, I’m not experienced in the behind-the-scenes stuff, which is basically why I went for a WordPress site in the first place.

@vegburgerhi What theme are you using? It is possible the theme is causing this error. Also, if I know you can not access your wp-admin but if you could try to job your memory and tell us what plugins you are using that might help as well!

@wistex It will be easier for us to help you if you start a new thread and answer the questions above. Also please be sure to include the exact error in your post when you start the new thread.

    Thanks.

@binarywc I really can’t remember which theme I have. I can see my list of them but not which one is activated. I’ve turned all my plugins off so they shouldn’t be affecting things anymore anyway?

Okay, you disabled plugins through ftp by changing the name of the directory correct?

As for the theme can you send a list of the themes you have? Are you able to access wp-admin or that give the same errors? If you can access wp-admin then you will be able to tell exactly what theme you have.

    @binarywc
    Yes, that’s right. I can’t access wp-admin at all.

    Themes are:
    gdvintage
    munding-lite
    sketch
    twentyfifteen
    twentyfourteen
    twentythirteen
    twentytwelve
    vryn-restaurant

While I was waiting on your reply I went out to google and found a cached version of your site. Reviewing the code of the cached version of the site from before you updated it looks like you are using the Sketch theme.

Are you comfortable editing the DB through phpMyAdmin? If not, do you have someone available on your team who is? You can change the theme to a default theme via the db and see if the error persists by following these instructions:

    https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/edu/wordpress/change-theme-in-db

    (@vegburgerhi)

There’s no team – just me. I have no idea how to use phpMyAdmin or to be honest even if I have one. I followed the instructions on that link to log in to cPanel and both of the browser address options are throwing up the same error as I have with wp-admin anyway.

So did you change the theme in the DB or were you not successful with doing that?

If you were unsuccessful, kindly tell me who your website is hosted with and I can try to help you further here in the support boards. The other option you have is to post a job at Jobs.WordPress.net. This is an easy change to test if the theme is causing the issue. Unfortunately, though, exchanging contact info and/or login credentials is prohibited here in the support boards.

Like I said, I wasn’t able to get into phpMyAdmin. I’m hosted with LCN.

I just had someone else’s help to go through the guide to manually update WordPress. I’ve done that, deleted all non-generic themes, and the site is still not working. I’ve deleted most of my plugins, I’ve lost all my theme settings, and it’s still not made any difference.

You should always backup before making drastic changes. I have seen this error in the past after running updates and had the same issue where switching to default theme and disabling plugins did not fix it. Let me do some digging to find the fix. It may take me a few days to find the fix. I have it saved in my favorites some where and have have thousands of favorites.

It is possible someone with more experience and a better memory than myself may chime in before I do with the fix so follow the thread!

I have a backup, but surely I’m going to run into the same problem again as soon as I try to update? Besides the fact I have no idea how to get the backup loaded in and which directories to save stuff into. I can’t just keep it on the old wordpress version forever.

No, I meant you should have taken another backup before making the changes I suggested.
