A test site to avoid any mistakes on a live website.

I would like to have a test site to use before doing something on a live site. I would like you to look at this from a complete beginner point of view. I’ve been looking at cloning, staging environment, test environment etc and am now completely mixed up as to which is the best and most simple way.

Would very much apreciate help. If this is in the wrong section, I can repost.
