As Google urges web developers to improve page speed, I set out to find a lightweight, expertly coded theme that was not bloated ‘out of the box’. GeneratePress is that theme. Those studying UX and UI are learning that sliders don’t convert, cause high bounce rates, impede SEO, and are generally ineffective. Yet when we go to purchase a so-called premium theme it invariably is built around it’s slider. GP is flexible enough you can get free of slider-mania – but if you (or your client) absolutely wants one, you can research lightweight sliders that don’t drag your whole site down. (SiteGround recommends Soliloquy if you have to have one.) The free version is good but the premium add-ons give a developer most of the essential tools – and at just $39. I own all the big “name-brand” themes; Avada, X, The 7, Enfold – the time I thought I was saving with them was more than offset but the time I was forced to spent on GTMetrix and Pingdom trying to get them to load in a reasonable time. Not only that but they made me lazy as a designer and developer; “I’ll just copy and paste my stuff into this theme and just accept all the styling even if the body text is too small and too light to read. You owe it to yourself to wean yourself off the slow bloated slider-mania marketplace themes. Thanks to the developers for their creation and support of this theme.
