importing from another wp – delete?

I am about to import a xml from another wordpress install into a staging wordpress install. Basically a duplicate of my live site so i can play around with it and do no damage to whats live.

First time doing this. Will importing the XML delete or move anything off of the live site or will it just make a copy? Or maybe it will just point to things like images? Thanks!
