hacked site re-install

  • Hi all. My site was hacked yesterday and i think it would be wise to re-install everything from a backup I have. I was wondering if using filezilla – can I just delete all the files currently on the server, and replace them with my back up ones and do I have to do anything else? (im a novice on this btw!)

  • Most of the files in wordpress don’t really change much. You just want to make sure your configuration files are ok. You can do a full reinstall if you want and it shouldn’t hurt anything. WordPress stores post and pages in its database. If your database is corrupt then you have bigger issues.

    You might want to make a copy of the wp_content folder because this where all your themes and plugins live. You should also make a backup of the wp-config.php file since this tells wordpress how to access your database and how to configure your site. The rest of the files can be deleted and replaced with a fresh install.

    Thanks for the info @mrtom414 hopefully the database is ok. I’ve got a backup of that too, but I’ll go with the WordPress files first! All the best!
