Everything except media upload works

We are using this briliant plugin on 4 different wordpress sites. The plugin works fine with core updates and theme+plugin installation/upgrades. However we remain unable to upload files through the media interface. All sites belong to user:www-data with a permission of 755 (dir) and 644 (files).

Any suggestions as to why media acts differently than the other wordpress approaches?
