Installing & testing on a server that has a site with a different website & CMS?

  • My client has a site https://www.energyworkforce.net
    He isn’t happy with his site so I was hired to redesign the site. They’re using another tool I think Joomla.

    I have checked the hosting requirements of their current webhost and they meet the requirements for WordPress installations.

    I want to be able to install and test WordPress on the server but I’m afraid that my installation might affect the current website that is live.

    How do I install WordPress so that I can test and develop the site without disturbing the current site that will be removed only after I’ve completed my work?

    I have installed WAMP on my local machine, can I install WordPress on WAMP and then test (the local machine is running under Windows Vista – Won’t that effect anything because I was told that we need the mod_rewrite Apache module and Windows doesn’t have that).

    Please help me as I’m a newbie and at this point I think I’m only capable of installing WordPress on a server thats’ in an ideal situation (where there is no other site hosted yet). I don’t know what to do in this situation.

  • Create a subdirectory folder or set up a subdomain in client’s server and install WordPress and test it there. When you’re ready to launch, read and implement actions recommended in https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Moving_WordPress

    The root folder is called httpdocs. So all i have to do is create another folder inside httpdocs, name it for example “wordpress” or anything i like and then store all the files in that new folder i created within httpdocs? Correct me if i’m wrong.

    This method is going to be difficult in the long run as we will have to upload using an FTP every time we want to make a change. For testing purposes, do you think we’d be better off installing in on our local machine? I have WAMP installed on my Windows Vista PC. Apache can use mod_rewrite on Windows or any other OS. What are the problems we will most likely face when installing on our local machine? Any settings we need to change on WAMP?

    It’s really up to you where you install your test site. The question is, are the configurations of your local machine the same as your client’s server configs?

    As to FTP uploads, personal experience = less than 10 minutes to upload WordPress, install it, upload theme and plugins. It’s the tweaking and further customization the client wants after that takes a lot of time for replacement sites.

    If you’re concerned that the client won’t pay you after you’ve uploaded to a server which he controls, then by all means set it up in local machine. Get at least 50% down payment before you upload to his server ?? Good luck.
