To the WordPress Veterans: which plugin?

  • Hi there,

    I’m complete wordpress and “webpage maker” newbie. I found the below list of “Must-have plugins” but unfortunately the actual plugin name for each recommendation is missing. Could anyone please suggest what in their opinion the plugin which would be the most obvious choice: (that is, extensively used in the community, a good choice, easy, stable etc)

    Of course it’s a matter of opinion ??

    Must-Have Plugins
    1) Onpage SEO plugin to help you with SEO Optimization of your pages
    2) Google Analytics plugin to track your visitors

    5) Sitemap plugin to generate sitemap.xml for your website and automatically update it after any change you make (vital for search engines)

    6) Plugin to change login page URL in order to secure it from hackers attacks

    #6 is pointless — obscurity is not security. I prefer to use a decent application firewall like WordFence.

    #1 and #5 — Yoast SEO

    #2 — there are a number of them, no preference

    Thanks for your reply Steve. I’ve done some reading since posting, I keep seeing recommendations to use Jetpack https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/jetpack/

    Would you recommend using this plugin to cover #1,#5 as well as #2 (ie not google analytics per say, just analytics?)

    I think the latest version of Jetpack will now add GA code to your header, so give it a try. I don’t recommend it for SEO. I use Yoast for that.

    Thanks Steve. Last question, a GoDaddy technical support person kindly suggested that I most definitely have to have a CAPTCHA if I am going to have a Contact Form.

    I’m currently using Contact Form 7, I see the recommendation is to use reCAPTCHA… but I really don’t want to have anything to do with Google. And it’s recommended not to use the Really Simple Captcha.

    In short, any recommendations for a simple Contact Form which has an inbuilt Captcha with it?

    I have no issue with Google; I use recaptcha on my forms because it’s really easy for users. There are a number of non-Google based captcha-like plugins in the plugin repository.

    Thanks for your quick reply Steve, I’ve looked into the repository – – there are so many options and I really don’t know how to weigh any up. Could you perhaps just give me a couple of options you yourself would be happy to use?

    I gave this plugin a try https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/simple-basic-contact-form/

    And it seems to be just want I need – Simple with a Captcha and no googly.
