I want to duplicate template-tags.php for my child theme to edit the footer copyright text. This page is is not an option in the “Files” tab. What should I do? My child theme is already setup.

Alternatively, can I copy and paste the .php snippet from the template.tags.php (shown below) and paste it in footer.php, which I have a copy of in my child theme? Is this a bad practice?

The answer to this question revolves around the condition that encloses the function in question:

if ( ! function_exists( 'onepress_footer_site_info' ) ) {

This exists so that you can create an “override” version of function in the child theme functions file.

When WordPress runs, it first loads the active theme functions file. If the active theme uses the “Template” property (which tells WordPress it is a child theme), it then loads the “Template” (parent) theme’s function file. This is the essence of the child theme concept.

WordPress reads the “override” version of the function first, and skips the original version when WordPress reads the parent theme functions because it already exists. Otherwise, PHP would throw a “duplicate function” Fatal Error.

Child theme configurator makes a distinction between “include” and “template” php files. Any file that contains functions or classes is considered an “include” and is not shown in the “Files” tab. This is to prevent the same “duplicate function” error described above.

The bottom line is that functions must be “hooked” into the WordPress execution flow, either by using the child/parent mechanism explained here, or by using a “filter” or “action” hook.

Thanks for your quick and detailed response @lilaeamedia. Your response was more technical than I expected. However, with your response, I made the decision to copy said function to functions.php and change it to my liking.
