Custom subtitle

I have recurring events. I would like to add a field to the recurring events so that when an event is coming up I can go in and add specific information into the particular event. In particular, I would like to add a subtitle to the event so that I can use that subtitle in templates that display the event list and the event. I have no idea where to begin. Can you please point me in the right direction?
