• I want my narrowcolumn to be a certain width, but when I set it too 950px my sidebar flies underneath it. I know it has something to do with another settings’ width, but I cant seem to figure it out.

  • Lots of people have similar problems with the sidebar. If you add 20 pixels to the width of one column, you need to remove 20 pixels of width from the other column.

    Firebug can help you figure out how it is fitting together.

    I try that firefox addon now, in the meantime,
    check out my narrow and my sidebar section of my css:

    .narrowcolumn {
    float:left;
    margin:0 0;
    padding:0 0 20px 45px;
    width:450px;
    }
    .widecolumn {
    margin:5px 0 0 150px;
    padding:10px 0 20px;
    width:450px;
    }

    The narrow should be 940 and i wanted the sidebar to be beside it, but when i push it from 450 to 940 it pushes the sidebar to the bottom.

    You just don’t get it…
    Most of the themes, and every Kubrick-clone theme is made in the following way: there is a “wrapper” div with XXXpx width.
    |———————————————–| let’s say 900px
    Inside it, there is a “main” container for the posts
    |——————————–||————-|
    e.g. 600px for the “main” + 300px for the right “sidebar”

    Now, if you increase the 600 to 800… 800+200=1000 will NEVER fit into the design and will push down the sidebar.
    What is so complicated?

    Note. The name of the divs might differ from one theme to another…

    I’m trying to learn this stuff so i would appreciate it if you didn’t put me down for trying lol.

    I guess whatYOU dont get is that I basically asked how to control that “wrapper” you speak of; mind you since im learning this stuff just through wordpress i haven’t learnt all the technical terms yet.

    I know it has something to do with another settings’ width, but I cant seem to figure it out.

    – See? I do get that there is a ‘container’ of sorts.

    So now I have to find out if i can change that div/wrapper/container to a bigger width. or where the code is that controls the over all theme width.

    I have to find it somewhere in my style.css im assuming. (im probaly wrong) lol

    I think what Moshi… (and I learnt this from just from what he wrote..

    Is that the “wrapper” is the narrow and wide column combined. (Also the “Page”)
    The Narrow is the Sidebar and the Wide is the Content (depending on what is larger)
    Now if your Wrapper is 900px
    … and you make the narrow 950px.

    You are by default the turning the “narrow” into “Wide” column and the remaining “10px” of sidebar is going to get pushed down cause there is no where to put it now.

    Therefore what you have to change first is the “page” pixels.

    I know this is late but I think thats the explaination… and Thank You Moshi.
