According to developers, this plugin is tested to WordPress 3.5.1 and BuddyPress 1.7. Since i need to use forums, I choosed bbPress release 2.3.1. and I installed it.
Now according to the advices suggested by the developers of this Import plugin:

“Before continuing, it’s recommended that you do the following:
Activate BuddyPress / bbPress forums (Dashboard> BuddyPress> Forum Setup)”

If I check into the Dashboard> BuddyPress> I can’t find any Forum Setup tab?
I get instead three tab: “Components” “Pages” and “Setting” and into the “Components” window I have all the components activated excluding the “Retired” one which is “Group Forums” accompanied with the follow statement “BuddyPress Forums are retired. Use bbPress.”
I’m quite confused about how to proceed.
Why BuddyPress dashboard don’t show me any tab or menu about bbPress which I installed and activated?
And more, is it suitable bbPress 2.3.1 with that coupled WP 3.5.1 and BuddyPress 1.7?
    Any suggest will be appreciated.
    Thanks a lot

As I mentioned before, reading the thread give you some suggest on how to use this plugin nowadays that there is no any more support for it.

Anyway, I wish to share here my experience about this plugin that, up to now, helped me on importing members, groups, discussions, forum, but not “Events”.
I could not find documents online talking about negative experience on importing “Events” from Ning.
So I came to the conclusion that few have adopted it or even that BuddyPress need another extension or plugin in order to handle events.

Now back to the concern on how to proceed I wish to point out some miss information on the thread mentioned above.

It seems the problem is that the plugin was designed for import into BuddyPress forums, not bb press ones. So you must activate and configure buddypress forums and the plugin will work out of the box (assuming your json files are correct).

According to what I’m experiencing in this days, the legacy BuddyPress Forum –
which work perfectly with “Import from Ning” – is the one related to BuddyPress release 1.6.1. If you use BuddyPress 1.7 you will get only troubles.
I did not indeed see any issue about what mentioned by bschaich (@bschaich)

JSON files for discussions (ning-discussions.json and ning-discussions-local.json) were formatted in the wrong way. Both had one “]” too much at the end of file

As far as this statement is dated (3 years, 5 months ago), nowadays (May 2017) the JSON files, produced by the export of the Ning application, don’t have those excess square brackets.

Now that I achieved the importing all my files except “Events” (which it is impossible to be imported), I must face the upgrade of all plugins BuddyPress 1.6.1, bbPress 2.3.1 and worst WordPress 3.5.1.
    It’s a mess.
I just tried to upgrade to WP 4.7 and I get my site screwed-up.

Keep tuned up I will report what next.

Dude, i wanted to get all the files from my ning community to the new releases of WP and BP but reading what you have put in here, i thing the best is to begin from scratch…what do u think? cause after you could import everything u said that when u update it screwed up right? :S
