• Hello!

If this would have been better posted in the Fixing WordPress subforum, I apologize.

I was given the opportunity to be in charge of a site I did not create; there are 33 active plugins and a custom theme (but no child theme). WP needs to be updated to latest version.

I do not currently have the hosting credentials (though I intend to ask for them). How can I very safely copy this site and their plugins to another server so I can test updating WordPress and the plugins, and some other changes they request? Would All-in-One migration or Duplicator be the answer I am looking for? I really, really don’t want to break this site by installing one of these plugins. WordPress Importer did not bring over the plugins.

Thank you sincerely for any suggestions on how to do this safely and idiot-proof-ly.

  • Can you do a backup and download from the current hosting provider? Can yo FTP into the site? I usually do both. I get the hosting providers backup and then FTP and just copy the files to develop locally.

I have rarely found a problem with this but in your case 33 PLUGINS! Yikes, there are tools out there but I have never tried them and just do it the dirty way because it makes me feel safe. Just a suggestion from a very JR Developer.

At times, I do have had to download plugins individually and install them on my local development site. This would be the same if you are working on a development server.

Take a look at this plugin, it will zip up your local site and allow you to unzip it once you have uploaded it on your public server
