This could be a bug but I am not sure…
Sometimes a new translation is not linked to its original version, although I create it with the relevant + button. So in the pages list I have the two pages listed separately as if without translations.
Interestingly the language switcher widget I put in the menu still takes you from one to the other.
How can I make the two pages show up in the list as each other’s translation?

Well, just figured out, by mistake…
I still don’t know why the separation occurs but I found the not-so-obvious way to link / re-link two posts, pages etc. as each other’s translations.

In the Languages box on the Edit screen, under Translations, if your existing translation does not appear and instead you see a + (plus) sign and blank field after it, click in the field and start typing any word from the title of the translation. A list of matching titles will appear and when you click on a title, it will populate the field. Update the post to commit the edit. Tada.
