Change images location – bug

I tried and ruined my site, fortunately it was easy to reverse.
So I added
define( 'UPLOADS', ''.'img' );
at the bottom of my wp-config.php.
It works as expected but only for the new files uploaded through media library page. I copied all images from previous location (public_html/wp-content/uploads) to new location (public_html/img) over FTP and although they are physically there, the media library doesn’t see them, neither my webite pages, so now my website does not show any images at all..

I do have my image back, I commented the line in wp-config.php.
I just figured out that my problem is somewhere else. I thought I can simply upload files via FTP which doesn’t work that way. There is a plugin called “Add From Server” but it doesn’t allow me to automatically add single files via FTP, every time I need to import them through WP.
