I know you can specify the order of the category as it’s shown on the page via settings > ordering > sort categories (Name, FAQ count or slug).

How do you display the categories in a *specific* order that isn’t alphabetical ie name or by count. Isn’t the category slug just a repetition of the category name?

Let’s say you’ve three categories – Apple, Pears and Oranges – and you want them displayed in this order permanently:

    Pears
    Apples
    Oranges

    How is this achieved?

Again, thanks in advice to the experts out there!

  • Hi Chocmanwp,

There is no way to set categories in custom order. You can sort categories either in ascending or descending order. By selecting “Sort Categories Ordering” option but you can use on which basic categories are sorted. It is either Name, Slug, or number of FAQs in category. Category slug is auto-generated when you add categories. But, you can change slug whatever you like. The “slug” is the URL-friendly version of the name. It is usually all lowercase and contains only letters, numbers, and hyphens. That is used to create permalink for each post. So, you can set slug to something else but related to them for Pears, Apples, Oranges so it can be sorted by slug ascending or descending order.

Great, many thanks, I’ll just change the category slug so I can sort in the order required. I’m not bothered about a URL for each FAQ. Thank you again.
