Hi. I’m having problems with Facebook sharing. When I try to share a url, the space where the image should be is blank. If I go into the Social tab of Yoast SEO and disable, save, then enable the “Add Open Graph meta data” option, it seems to briefly resolve the problem (I can share a post and the image appears, but normally only once before failing again). Here’s one post where this is happening:

    https://studioknow.com/2010/07/what-to-do-when-adrift-alone-in-the-middle-of-the-ocean/

Using the Sharing Debugger, I’m seeing a “Circular redirect path detected” message — but I don’t really know what this means, if this is the cause, or how to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

We have tested the provided page using the Facebook object debugger and we see the redirect appears.

However, this seems to be the cache issue as we were able to resolve the redirect error and the image issue after using the Fetch new scrape information option thrice.

While we are unable to confirm why the error appeared and how it was fixed, we do know that Facebook stores cache of sharing URL. So, if the correct data isn’t appearing, please use the Facebook debugger tools to clear the cache from the Facebook,

Hi, and thanks a lot for the help. Do you know what could possibly be causing this issue? Could it be something to do with my server? Using the debugger seems to be just a temporary solution, as I’m already having problems with that same url I posted here initially (image not showing, and reports of circular redirect path). I need to fix this somehow, otherwise the problem will continue. Also, and this seems strange, the url seems to post OK (with image) on my profile page (facebook.com/tonygdunnell) but not on the FB homepage or on my FB pages. Does that suggest any particular issue. Thanks again for the help.

    Hi,

We do know that Facebook uses caching so there may be a difference in caching between Facebook Profile, Facebook Homepage, and the different Facebook pages. We suggest contacting Facebook for more information as to how they use caching. You can contact Facebook here:?https://www.facebook.com/help/.

It may also be a caching issue on your site as the right image does appear after it is scraped. We suggest speaking to your theme developer or host provider for more information. You may need to clear your theme, plugin, server, CDN such as Cloudflare etc. caching.

OK, thanks. I’ve tried all of your suggestions. I’ll see if the people at FB have any further ideas. Thanks again.

This is marked as resolved, but I cant see which answer is resolving the issue. I have the same issue. Many posts, all with the same structure and Facebook title, description and image set in the Yoast SEO box. But 1 article (https://thepouringtales.com/nikolay-kiselev/) wont show the image at all on facebook, while all others work fine. Its also not using the description provided in the facebook tab of the yoast seo box.

How can we debug whats happening?

Nope, just tried changing the facebook title, description and image for a post that scrapes fine on facebook and no changes. Still not scraping the correct info, but at least it shows an image.

Just did a little test. If I use the facebook debugger to scrape an old article it scrapes all the info fine, even tags, locale, etc. As soon as I update the post and scrape again, all the info is gone.

Could it be that an update to Yoast SEO is messing up all the facebook data??

Hold up! Think I found the culprit – it seems that W3 Total Cache Minify is causing it.

    My website is https://www.ancientrecipes.org

I have the same problem on my whole website. On all my RECIPES Facebook images just don’t appear. However, they do appear on regular posts. I uninstalled W3 Total Cache, I have a Facebook image set on Yoast. My website uses an additional taxonomy called recipes from WP Ultimate Recipes plugin, but it used to work fine earlier. I contacted the WP Ultimate Recipes plugin support and also Iframely plugin support and they said that neither of those plugins process facebook links, so they cannot be it. Also I have the exact same theme and plugins running another website and there everything is working fine.

I cleared oEmbed cache and Fcebook OPenGraph cache using 3rd party plugins for that and the images still don’t come up.

    @egurevich

Here is what I did to fix this the other day. Use https://opengraphcheck.com and check where there is an og:image set on your website. I can see on your home page there isn’t one set.

After some digging in the Yoast SEO code, I saw that yoast expects a featured image and somehow fails to get to the backup image (the one you set in the Yoast social settings). I saw that the page that is the home page didn’t have a featured image set, because that also doesn’t appear anywhere on the website. As soon as I set the featured image, it was showing correctly in the Open Graph tags. Facebook pulled the correct image when posting the link.

Do you have a featured image set on the posts that dont show an image?

Yes og:image is set. I have a featured image on every recipe page. Still getting a facebook blank.

Here is a test link for example:

    https://www.ancientrecipes.org/recipes/grape-syrup-sapa-siraeum-siraion-hepsema/

Just had a look at one of your recipes. Facebook is pulling the correct image, but not showing it. And I think its probably because the images are very large (±4000x3000px). Thats a really bad idea to use such large images.

You should definitely do something about those. I recommend a plugin called Imsanity. It automatically resizes your images to a sensible size on upload. Also something that optimises images like EWWW Image Optimizer.

Better even would be to use responsive images, so that smaller versions get loaded on mobile.

Your featured images shouldn’t be larger than around 1500px.

You should be able to choose the size of image it uses in the posts, just dont use “full”, but instead choose for example the “large” size. You can see what sizes you have set in the media settings and there are also really good plugins for creating more sizes.

I know for a fact that image size is not the problem here. Here is my other website that has the same size images in featured image 4032×3024 or even larger (I want large images on purpose so people can zoom in if they want or print) and everything loads fine on facebook. Here is a link to test.

    https://www.ancientgames.org/knossos-game-zatrikion/

The only difference bewteen these two sites is the recipes. This site does not have a recipes taxonomy and a recipes plugin. Everything else is the same.

Something is going on with the recipes. But I don’t know what.

Hm, okay, that IS strange if its working on the other website. I get your point, but I think the negative impacts outweigh the positive. You should post smaller images and provide a link to the full size. Or at least lazy load the images, so it only loads the image when you scroll to it. Otherwise it will really negatively impact your SEO rating, because of the large size of each page (>10Mb). Maybe you could have just one smaller image at the beginning of the post that is the width of the content (1080px), which will still look perfectly fine on all screen sizes and then have the large images in the content.

It could be that the recipes plugin stores the images in a different way and doesn’t create the alternative sizes or something like that.

But you could try setting a featured image on one of the recipes and use a smaller image and just see if it works then.

If it still doesn’t work than I guess I am out of suggestions.

I think you are on to something. I just created a test page recipe with a small image 512×512 and it is showing up on facebook.

    https://www.ancientrecipes.org/recipes/test-image-size/

So this must be some kind of combo between the recipes plugin and Yoast. I will look into reducing image sizes for the featured images.

    Thank you.

I used Imsanity plugin to resize all of the featured images to below 3024×3024 and now all facebook images show up. You solved the problem. Thank you for that.
