• My WordPress blog now defaults to: “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.” see here: https://drawn-in-media.com/blog/

This happened right after I deactivated the w3-total-cache plugin.

I have tried deleting the .maintenance file via ftp using Filezilla as suggested from other posts, but the file does not exist. And, yes I checked “force showing hidden files” under the server tab and it doesn’t show up. Is there a plugin that may be executing maintenance mode instead of wordpress itself?

I tried re-naming the w3-total-cache folder too, and that doesn’t work either.

What else can I try to fix this? thank you

You can fix the problem following this guide: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/FAQ_Troubleshooting#How_to_clear_the_.22Briefly_unavailable_for_scheduled_maintenance.22_message_after_doing_automatic_upgrade.3F

To do that, you’ll need to access your server via SFTP, FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, all of which should be detailed in your hosting provider’s documentation.

Thanks for the reply, however I already tried the instructions given that post. There is no .maintenance file in the main directory. And I have “force showing hidden files” checked in FileZilla.

    Ok, it’s possibly cached then.

Renaming W3TC’s folder doesn’t actually disable the cache, it simply removes what controls the cache, locking it in a static/cached state.

Try clearing W3TC’s cache from its settings (you’ll need to name its directory back to what it was and reactivate the plugin, if you haven’t already).

I can’t access the dashboard to clear w3tc cache. Is there a way to clear the cache via ftp? Or a way to -reactivate the plugin via ftp? Is there any other way to solve this problem?

I am considering deleting all my plugins via FTP and re-uploading WordPress 4.8? I don’t mind re-installing the plugins, I just don’t want to lose all of my past content. Would this work?

    Yes, that’s worth a try.

I also recommend asking at https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/w3-total-cache so the plugin’s developers and support community can help you with this.

Ok, I deleted all my plugins and reinstalled WordPress 4.8 and… I am still stuck in maintenance mode. sigh. Are there any other files I should I delete, that might get this blog working again?

I did also post my issue on the post you linked.

I have decided to completely delete the WordPress site and do a fresh reinstall. I backed up everything up on my PC. I would like to just install WP fresh, then install my plugins, and then manually install my previous posts. How do I do this? Or, Can you point me in the direction on how to restore my previous content/posts? I know how to reinstall plugins and such via ftp. But I do not know where the blog posts are saved in the back.
    How do I do this?

Try downloading WordPress again, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and delete then replace your copies of everything on the server except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download. This will effectively replace all of your core files without damaging your content and settings.

Some uploaders tend to be unreliable when overwriting files, so don’t forget to delete the original files before replacing them.
