I have several galleries that are all accessible from the maine page. Each gallery is assigned to a category. In order to filter these, I decided to add categories to the menu (following the directions in the video). When I click on the category from the menu bar, I am redirected to an error 404 — page not found. What should happen is all the galleries of that category should appear. I have no other categories on the site nor are there any pages with the titles of the categories, so WordPress cannot be getting them confused.

I decided to experiment. One of my categories is called “Travel,” and like all the rest sends me to a page 404 error. I created a page called “Travel.” This page has a different URL than the category does, but when I select the travel category, it takes me to the travel page. Obviously something isn’t right here, but I can’t figure out how to get the categories to work.

My site is kaym photography . com (without the spaces). I am using Twenty-Seventeen theme.

    Thanks.

    Hey there,
This is an age-old bug in WordPress: https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/13459

Your slugs are colliding, but WordPress isn’t warning you about it because they’re not the same post type.

An easy fix is to rename one of the slugs, either category or the page. I recommend giving the page a nice SEO optimized URL like “https://***.com/travel-photography” or whatever the travel page is about (travel-ebook, travel-tips, travel-guide, my-travel-story, etc.).

    Hi Kay,
If you like the plugin and the support, please consider adding a review here on WordPress. That would help me out a lot! https://www.ads-software.com/support/plugin/photography-portfolio/reviews/?filter=5

I’m having the same issue but can’t find a resolution using your suggestion or the linked issue. I’ve tried removing all Portfolio categories along with any pages that may have had similar names, ran WP-Optimize to clean up any left over remnants, and then ran a plugin to remove old slugs. Afterwards when I re-create that portfolio category, I’m still getting a 404 error. Not quite sure what to try next.

Seems the issue resolved itself. My front-page was not my set as my portfolio, it was a different page. I changed it to my portfolio and the category sub-menus started working. Switched the front page back to my previous page, category sub-menus continued to work.

Likewise. I am having a similar problem. My site is amschwartzdesign dot com. I created 3 categories under my portfolio. When you click them they should take you to a gallery of images under that category. But it gives an error message when you click- or nothing shows up.

Maybe I am getting categories and entries mixed up- but when I added entries and linked them to their appropriate categories they did not work. Now I am adding a photography portfolio to the category and that is not working.

What I am looking to do is have a visitor click a category in the menu under portfolio. I want that to take them to a gallery of images- i.e. a gallery of sculpture, one of product design ect.

Any insight in figuring this out is greatly appreciated!

Categories are meant to group multiple galleries together. So you can have, for example, a category called “Sculptures” and then 5 galleries “Modern”, “Ancient”, etc.

If all you want is a Gallery called “Sculptures” with various sculptures in it – you don’t need to use a category at all. Just create an entry, call it Sculptures, and add it to your menu!

404 Error Fix:Most likely you need to reset your permalinks. Like this: https://www.inmotionhosting.com/support/edu/wordpress/wordpress-features/reset-permalinks
