When to enable Jetpack Staging Mode

    My site is hosted on a GoDaddy Managed WordPress account.

    I want to pull my site into the staging environment to give it a face lift. The last time I tried to use the staging environment, all my stats got jumbled (thank you to WordPress support for fixing them!).

    When (and how) should I activate the Jetpack Staging Mode? Should it be done on the production site *before* I pull to staging? Or should it be done on the staging server right after I pull?

    Also, do I use Staging Mode or Development Mode? Or both?

  • I think that staging mode is a feature of your account with GoDaddy and not a component of Jetpack, so you may not get much help here. I suggest you double-check this with GoDaddy.

    Follow up question: I see that Jetpack also has a “Safe Mode.” Is this different than Development Mode and Staging Mode? I’m thoroughly confused as to how I should properly configure my staging environment. ??

    Thank you for pointing these out. I knew that GoDaddy had a staging function as part of its managed WP plans, so I thought you were referring to that. I didn’t know about the Jetpack functions, so thanks again.

    Hi Ken,

    Sorry about the delay in writing back to you. If you haven’t already got Jetpack enabled on the main (live) site then I would suggest doing that first. Once that’s active and connected, you can activate Jetpack on the staging site, from there you’ll be prompted with the option of ‘Safe Mode’, you’ll want to confirm that this is simply a staging site and not for production. This will create a new ID for your site so Jetpack won’t mix the stats with your live site.

    Thanks for the reply. I haven’t pulled my site into staging yet. Wanted to make sure I do it correctly…

    When I pull my production site (with Jetpack active) into staging, will I automatically get the Safe Mode option?

    Also, what happens after I make my changes and push Staging back to Production? Will Jetpack automatically know it’s back in production without mixing up site IDs?

    Hi@ken524,

    Assuming that your staging site will be a clone of your production site (database included), then Jetpack will recognise that you’re attempting to connect a second site with the same Jetpack ID (stored in your site’s database), this will automatically prompt you about putting your site into safe mode.

    I’ve got to correct myself and clarify what Safe Mode does – Safe Mode WON’T create a new ID for your site (sorry about the earlier information I gave), however it will stop that site from syncing any information with Jetpack – this means any stats/posts won’t pollute with your main site.

    That shouldn’t be an issue, however if you do push changes back to your production site and the Safe Mode option carried over then you should be able to see that you’re in ‘Safe Mode’: https://jetpackme.files.wordpress.com/2016/11/screen-shot-2016-11-20-at-2-36-56-pm.png?w=1576&h=932

    From there you can do the reverse and select Fix Connection to bring it out off safe mode.
